This problem is common with the L300 series as well as others. It's related to the fact Vista was pre-installed. Has to do with partitioning.

What you have to do is power on the Laptop and then press F2 to get into the BIOS menu. Then scroll down to the SATA option and change it from ACHI to Compatibility then exit saving your changes (F10) and then reboot your Laptop from the XP Operating System disk.

It will now let you install Windows XP or any other Operating System.

I havent got any sound drivers and want to download them for free

1) Go to the toshiba support site for these notebooks:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=2041070&rpn=PSLB1U&modelFilter=L300-EZ1004V&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768667

2) On page 3 of the downloads, second link from the top is a sound driver. Click on the link.

3) A frame will pop up with a link to "Download Now"

4) Download the installer to your computer and follow the directions.

If the laptop was "designed for Vista" or "designed for Windows 7", then it's quite likely that the manufacturer did *NOT* create any device-drivers for Windows XP. Thus, you'll be missing support for your LCD screen, your wired/wireless network adapters, your USB-ports, and so on.

Note that Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP Service Pack 2 as of July 15 this year (2010). So, trying to install an "unsupported" operating-system is *NOT* a good idea.

Stick with the operating system that was shipped with the computer.

I have a toshiba l300 laptop i have tried to install windows xp on it and an error comes up no oem drivers i cant reinstall vista with the o button ether

go to the toshiba site and ask them for an oem disc they probably charge about £80.00 for an xp disc but my advice is buy windows seven and install it it works a treat and installs all drivers on the l300 remember delete all partisions then create a new one

You can download any/all the Windows XP device drivers for your model laptop from the Toshiba WEB site from their download page.
Make sure you enter the model of your laptop so you can get the correct drivers.

Hi,

Probably because you have a SATA Hard Drive. If you want to install WIN XP, you may need to change your hard drive settings. For this go to the BIOS and change to Compatible Mode or IDE or Non SATA. The Reasons that WIN 7 install with no problems is because WIN 7 has already builtIn SATA drivers on it

Toshiba Satellite L300, just like Compaq Presario CQ40-416AU, doesn't support Windows XP (not backward compatible) anymore.
They both have the same Processor: AMD Turion X2, Core 2 Duoand Graphics: ATI Mobile Radeon, Integrated
