Over the next couple of weeks many more appeared exponentially and now has thousands of them. it looks like the stars in the night sky. i changed the bulb unit over and this did not solve the problem. any suggestions as to what this could be. it is about 3 1/2 years old.

You will most likely have to get the DMD chip replaced. I suggest you get a quote from the local Acer agent as to how much it would cost for this repair.
Sounds like a technical problem, no matter how long I've had this I would call the manufacturer and try and have them troubleshoot and then possibly have it looked at or replaced without you having to fork over any money.
Your computer is probably using the projector as a second screen instead of displaying a copy of the laptop screen. The quickest way to confirm is to try moving your cursor (mouse) off the right-hand side of the screen. Does it then show up on the projector? If so, then you can grab and move windows back and forth between the two screens.
If that solves it for you, please be sure to click the thumbs-up. If not, add a comment and I'll try to explain
