Sounds to me like you may have cats or pets of some kind. Hair from cats (or dogs) sometimes ends up inside the vents of a television. Static Electricity is the culprit for most sparks or jumps of electricity within an electronic system. Your television may need an extensive cleaning, (usually blown out with compressed air) and then some components, circuit boards or complete wire harnesses may need to be replaced.

The best way to keep this from happening in the future, is to keep any pets out of the TV room as much as possible. Hair from cats can almost always find it's way into computerized equipment, so annual cleaning by a reputable serviceman is normal maintenance. Also, any fluids, such as drinks or plants should never be anywhere around electronic components such as your TV or computers.

There was a pop and then my tv picture went black there is sound but no picture

Most likely the pop sound was the loss of your lamp module, due to normal burnout, causing immediate loss of video without affecting audio.
You'll want to do an internet search to price a new lamp for your projection TV.

Here's a YouTube video how-to describing lamp replacement for a Sony Wega Projection TV:

WEGA 36" : Screen is low contrast and green

Sorry to say, it sounds like a bad picture tube, But could be also the capacitor that filters the screen voltage on the crt drivers. In all my years though, your complaint has been the picture tube. Good Luck.
