When your car is low on oil, there is a sensor (sometimes called a switch, as well) that will light up an indicator inside the car to inform you of the low oil level. In some cases, checking the dipstick will show that there is actually oil present, which can be confusing and frustrating because it contradicts the sensor. If this happens to be the case, more than likely the oil pressure switch/sensor is malfunctioning and will need replacing.

How can it be full and show no reading on the stick? Did you change the oil first and add the proper amount? If so you may have the incorrect dip stick in this engine
Thanks.

The car cannot be low on oil because when you unscrew the cap to add the oil I can actually see oil in there. The dipstick is reading empty
The frustrating thing is that this is an old toyota pickup truck 22R engine. There is cap in the middle of the engine that you unscrew to add oil. I can see oil full inside there. But the dipstick is reading empty. It does not make sense.
