the phone line should be connected to the dsl modem, and from the dsl modem there should be the ethernet cable connected and at the other end of the ethernet cable is the computer.

No just Ethernet and modem port.

If you are using Windows XP, go to Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on Local Area Connection and then click Enable. (This is only applicable if the ethernet port is disabled).

Also, you may go to Device Manager (Right Click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager) and then check if the ethernet is disabled or has a question or exclamation mark.

If both dont work, your ethernet controller is broken.

Click Start / Control Panel / Network Connections.

Your Ethernet status should show under LAN or High Speed Internet. It might be disabled, in which case, right click & ENABLE.
