SOURCE: update problem with Garmin Nuvi 255w
I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into. They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.

You must call Garmin at 1-800-800-1020 they will walk you through plugging in nuvi to your computer (must have usb cord) and it will upload then go to my computer and choose garmin drive then click garmin folder and either find the folder they say or make new one like I did with the guy on the phone and put in code. The only information needed is the numbers on the bottom of the device.... super fast fix!
SOURCE: System Software Missing on Garmin Nuvi 255W
Hi,
Take a look at this site, http://www.garmin.be/missing.html
Download and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and start
the updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you can
use the Webupdater to get possible newer software..
It worked for me and my Zumo550

i am wondering why you want to open it.
There are some small parts that will fall out unless you are very careful and even more difficult to put back when you try and close it up
. Other than to change the battery there are no fuses or user repairable parts inside.

This unfortunately can happen. The 2xx & 2xxW are known to sometimes have the memory corrupted at turn on. Be glad you didn't lose your map or system software. I can understand your frustration losing your favorites.
The next time, once you have all of the favorites back in, connect your Nuvi to the PC and make a backup of the file "current.gpx" from your gpx folder. This will allow you to make a backup of your favorites.
