Try this, set the tension at 3, the width at 2.5 and the length at 2. this should give you a nice straight stitch for basic sewing or piecing for quilting.

Straight stitch settings for VX890

If you do not have an owner's manual, this one may be helpful. Although not exactly your model, it may be similar enough to assist you in learning how to use your machine:

Brother VX 810 User Manual

If you go to pg 8 of the document and look at the instructions for stitch length and stitch width dials, that is where you set a straight or zig-zag stitch.

How to set dial for straight stitch

The "N" on your stitch dial should point or line up with the "A" on your stitch dial. It should now make a straight stitch. Hope this helps.

How do I set the dials on husqvarna viking 6000 sewing machine

The "dial" in the back is for decorative stitches which require a "programmer" to be inserted with the stitch formation you want to form. For a straight stitch no cam is required in the back of the machine. The three dials on the front:

Upper Left: Stitch selector
Upper Right: Stitch lenght
Lower: Stitch width

Using the upper left dial select the straight stitch picture
Using the upper right, choose your stitch lenght
Using the lower, choose your needle position, left/center/right

I can not figure out how to set a straight stitch. I don't want a zig zag or a decorative stitch. How do i set my machine to do this?

First, make sure you select the straight stitch setting on the round dial. It is the one that has the dashed lines, looking like the stitch itself. Then, you may also want to be sure that the stitch WIDTH (dial with the picture that looks like a straight line gradually turning into a zig-zag) to the lowest setting, which is generally 0. With some machines, even after selecting a straight stitch setting, moving the stitch width can change needle position. Sometimes it will initiate the zig zag, other times it will move needle position left to right. Does that fix it?

My Kenmore sewing machine model number is 17630, & when I try to set the stitch length from a Straight Stitch setting to a Straight STRETCH Stitch setting, there isn't any difference. I have the length...

Take a look at the stitch length dial. If you turn that dial counter clockwise (to about 7 o'clock), it will set to stretch stitch. Then all of the stretch stitch features will work. When you want to go back to straight stitching, just move that dial back to what ever stitch length you wish.

What are the best settings on the 4 dials for the straight stitch? Do the ones on top have to match the wheel settings below? Thanks from a novice

Hello,
#1- tension settings, set this to "5" and leave it
#2- width control setting, 0 would be straight while 5 would be the full width of the stitch (would make a wide zig zag)
#3- Length control, larger the number, longer the stitch. (usually you will set this from 1.5 to 2.5)
#4- Stitch selector, match up the number with the stitch you want to sew. If you want to use the lower row of stitches (14-25) set the length dial to "ss". (ss stands for stretch stitch, such as for #14 (three rows of straight dashed lines) instead of just sewing one stitch forward, the machine will sew back and forth giving you a stretchy stitch/stronger)

Ordinary straight stitching

When you turn on a #1 Husqvarna Viking the machine defaults all the electronic settings to do a straight stitch at a 2.5mm stitch length, that equates to approximately 10 stitches per inch. The top tension dial sets itself automatically and the only other dial is on the left side of the machine. That dial sets the pressure on the foot that holds down the fabric. It's normal setting is 6.

Shark 384 - how can i get a straight stitch?

with the Shark Euro-Pro X machine, you need to bring the stitch width to zero it's the nob on top of the machine the manual states not to use it wider then 3 with the double needle cause it can break the needle. but either stitch selection "A" or "S" will give straight stitching with width at zero.
