My WD25001032-001 power supply got spoilt, i removed the hard disk and wanted to install it on my desktop as an additional hard drive. this was able to work out once. i have tried again and again to install it but it is not recognized. the drive is still working though. where can i get the drivers? the hard drive has very important files that i want to get access to... please help. thank you.

I'm a novice, but know enough to be dangerous, so I scrounged the internet trying to find a fix when this happened to me two weeks ago. I was devastated because of course I was too dumb (and cheap) to buy a second hard drive to back up the data on my first one. Lesson learned. Anyway, data recovery was 3 grand or more and I can't afford that so I took the advice of a bunch of people and tried the crazy idea of putting the dumb thing in the freezer. I took the case off using instructions I found on the web and then wrapped it in a white flour sack cloth to absorb moisture and put it in a ziplock in the freezer. After 24 hours freezing I tried again, nothing but obnoxious clicking. Going into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Device Manager I could see the drive but it said there were no partitions. Windows Explorer wouldn't assign a drive letter. I threw it back in the freezer for 10 days and on a whim last night tried again. The USB 2.0 port on my XP computer is broken and everyone told me not to use Vista if I could help it. So I took a USB hub and plugged the new hard drive in first and let it boot up. Then I took the frozen hard drive and plugged it in too and I was SHOCKED when Autoplay started running. Maybe the drivers and software from the good drive allowed the bad one to boot up. I don't know. I just know that it didn't work plugged in directly to the USB but it did via the hub.... Anyway, I have cords running out of the freezer into my laptop which is perched on a chair outside the freezer. I got all my pictures and priceless data off this drive overnight. It did stop a few times (says it can't find the file and the drive stops spinning) and I was able to unplug it, plug it back in and get it going again. It is SLOWER THAN MOLASSES and I would strongly suggest prioritizing your stuff so you get the most important data first because you don't know how long it will run, but I am thrilled beyond belief I got my pictures and home movies back. People told me I was crazy and stupid for freezing a hard drive, but it worked for me so I'm not going to question it. My data is on the new hard drive which I am immediately going to back up onto a second and I will live happily ever after because I didn't need to spend thousands to get my data back. Good luck!

For me, the problem has now been resolved. What I was really worried about was the 18 Gb of data that I thought I had lost. I was however able to find the containing folder by going into the "Tools" menu in the Explorer window. After selecting "Folder Options" I chose the "View" tab and marked "Show hidden files and folders" and unmarked "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)". Nothing happened at first but when I came back to my drive later I found a hidden folder with all the data I lost that had some funny extension to it. Can't remember what it was but someone I spoke to thought it could be the result of an incomplete file transfer being interrupted. So it seems my problem wasn't more severe than this. However, everytime I try to use Safely Remove Hardware to disconnect my WD 500Gb it says I can't and that I should try later. So there's my new problem: how to disconnect the drive without interrupting a (non-visible) data transfer...

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.

OK your hard drive is an ATA drive.
You motherboard will have two hard disk controllers, on the 1st controller the ATA cable will have two connectors - a connector will have the C drive hard disk attached to it and the jumper on the hard drive will be set as the Master drive. You may also have a CD or DVD drive connected to this cable, if so then the CD or DVD drive will be jumpered as a Slave drive.
If the second connector does not have a drive connected, then you can connect the second hard drive to this connector BUT it needs to be jumpered as a Slave drive.
You may elect to connect the second hard drive to the second IDE controller instead on the first controller. If there aren't any drives on the second ATA cable then the second hard drive can be jumpered as either a Master or Slave drive.
If there is a drive on the second ATA cable you need to determine the jumper setting of that drive and then set the jumper on the second hard drive to a different setting. BOTH drives on the same cable CANNOT have the same drive setting.
After installing the second hard drive, check the BIOS configuration of the second hard drive, if the hard drive is detected then when Windows boots up you will see the hard drive and its contents.
