Upon start up Garmin logo comes on, thencopyright info.loading maps, then it shuts down.

Your Nuvi has to boot past the Garmin logo to the main screen before it can be recognized by your PC. Is the unit dead? The Nuvi 14xx series is well known for its problem with the rear USB port coming loose. This will prevent the unit from receiving power from the external charger and will prevent the battery from being charged. be sure that the extension of the file is .IMG

be sure to "activate" you new maps on the unit (Wrench logo, map, info map) you should see there a list of you actual available maps. be sure that all of them are checked.

first I would try to load the current firmware from garmins website. if that doesnt work then try a master reset by holding the bottom right corner of the screen, holding that and turning it on. it will however erase all user data.
