It's likely your external drive developed a fault. You could try data recovery software yourself. But the quickest and easiest way I can suggest to recovery your files is an online data recovery service like http://FreeDataRecovery.us

They offer both remote data recovery and do-it-yourself data recovery advice.

I have an external samsung disk and suddenly I cannot access to any of my folders. When I try opening any of them it throws an error stating that: E:/recycler/file.exe is missing...thanks :))

use asoftech data recovery program to scan your external hard drive and then recover lost files. you can find it from facebook
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Asoftech-Data-Recovery/290956907592436?sk=info

This software scans all storage space on external hard drive and then join pieces together to recover files. So even virus affected your file table, and put virus to boot sector, the program can still be used to recover your files. Asoftech data recovery software will recover deleted files emptied from the Windows Recycle Bin, or lost due to the format or corruption of a hard drive, virus or Trojan infection, unexpected system shutdown or software failure.

Hard drive failure in system less than 2 years old!!

Since you are comfortable with working inside your computer, the best thing to do now is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of hard drive, SATA or EIDE.

Alternately you can use a live linux cd, boot up with that, and transfer your data to an external drive.

Once your data is safe, try booting to the Windows cd and attempt a repair installation.

And finally, yes, hard drives can go bad in 2 years or less.
