Where are screws located that access main motor compartment in panasonic canister MC-V9647? Something is rattling inside and smells hot. Belt or motor?

Do you mean the beater bar belt or the motor shaft belt? If so, you need to set the vacuum in a horizontal configuration and turn the vacuum upside down. Next remove the five screws from the base plate and lift the base plate off.

To replace the motor shaft belt, remove it from the outer pulley and the motor shaft. Put the new belt on the motor shaft and the outer pulley. To replace the beater bar belt, release the motor shaft belt to allow access the beater bar. Lift up the beater bar assembly to remove the beater bar belt. Replace the beater bar belt. Replace the beater bar assembly. Replace the motor shaft belt. Turn the beater bar assembly by hand to check that the unit is seated correctly. Put the base plate back on the vacuum. Align the tabs on the base plate with the slots on the vacuum and replace the five screws.

To properly fix a belt on a Kenmore vacuum, you will first need to indicate whether this is an upright or a canister vacuum. The model given, 116, is only the first part of the model number, and all Kenmore vacuums, upright and canister style, start with 116. There is a period first, then a whole string of numbers, 116.255553 etc.

Kenmore vacuums are mainly made by Panasonic for Sears, and most will use a Panasonic belt. If the belt is an upright, this makes it simple, and will be a Panasonic "UB" belt.

For a canister vacuum, most models use what's referred to as a cogged belt. This type of belt has little teeth on the inside of the belt, and is Panasonic CB-5 belt.

Instructions on How to Replace the Belt for an Upright;
There will usually be to plastic screws on the top of the agitator housing on the base of the vacuum, that will say belt access. Simply take a flat head screw driver, and turn the screws so that the screw is pointing up and down on both sides. Then pull the plastic agitator housing, or the top of the base of the vacuum off. Inside you will see a the roller brush, and the belt (or broken belt). Simply take the new belt and wrap it around the silver pulley located in the back of the machine, opposite the roller brush, and wrap the other end of the belt through the roller brush. Stretch the roller brush back into the housing of the machine, and replace the top of the base of the vacuum back on the machine. You should give the belt a tug, to ensure that the brush is spinning when the belt is being pulled..

Actually the screws to access the motor on Kenmore canisters are located underneath of the foot pedal that retracts the cord reel, and there's usually also two screws that underneath of the tool lid arms.

You may access the screws underneath of the cord reel by prying the foot pedal off of the vacuum. Simply put a flat head screw driver in between where the foot pedal and the vacuum cleaner meet on the top of the machine, and pry upwards with the screw driver. Once you remove the pedal you'll see the screws and have direct access to the vacuums motor.

When a vacuum cleaner smells like something is burning, it can only really be one of two things. Either the rubber belt inside of the power nozzle is burning, or the motor is burning. If it's the belt that's burning, it will be a burning rubber type of smell, but if it's the electrical motor, it will be more of an electrical smell.

Even though the brush is spinning, you probably need to replace the belt because it is stretched. It is probably slipping on the beater bar. This is causing the smell (burning rubber). I don't believe it is your motor. :-)

You will have to access the motor by removing the entire bottom brush housing and tilting the vac motor shaft out of the housing. Once released you will have a main body and brush housing.
There are visible motor housing screws in the lower portion of the main housing and if I recall there may be twoscrews inside the bag chamber as well

Is there a lever on the side that switches the unit between hard floors and carpet i.e. a switch that can turn the roller off? If so, check that the belt is sitting properly in that mechanism, and not rubbing on the side.

Other there may be a fault with the motor. Sounds like not an easy fix so may be worth the trip to see a Service Technician.

Panasonic MC-E 450UK upright vacuum cleaner.
Just had this problem myself...........easy to get at it when you know how.
Panasonic UK wouldn't help me so I spent some time working it out..........here it is.
Remove the hose from its mounting storage at the rear (called hose clip) where the main body of the vacuum cleaner meets the base of the handle assembly. Remove the screw at the rear of the handle assembly which is behind where the hose 'was' situated and is located inside the deep recess.
Using the soft part of your clenched hand as a hammer, knock the base of the handle assembly at the front and it will slide backwards off the main body of the vacuum cleaner. Don't be scared, give it a thump and keep moving it backwards with a few more knocks.
Next remove the two screws at the front which hold the mains cable and on/off switch cover in place.
Finally looking from the rear once more, lift the plastic 'lug' at the top of the cover and which is part of the cover. This will now allow you to release the cover and pull it forward.
There you go! Told you it was easy!
Watch out for the funny little spring at the front behind the cover in the tiny plastic tube where it connects to the small rubber tubing as it could possibly try to escape.
You now have complete access in order to cut the intermittent part of the cable out and remove it from the 'choc' block.

Use a flat blade screwdriver, The dusy compartemnt door will come off by pushing it back, it just pops out. Then the rear top cover is held on by a tab, one in each corner. Put the flat blat in the slot at the bottom of the cover and work it until it pops loose. Then there are 2 screws to tak out to remove the cover over the motor and cord reel asm. But now you can get to the motor.
