Depends on what output your stereo is. If you underrate the speakers (speaker watts is less than stereo output), the unit will sound louder for a while, then you end up blowing your speakers with the excess distortion. If you overrate the speakers (speaker watts is higher than stereo output) the speaker will not operate correctly and the distortion can damage it also. Its best to get a close match. Slightly higher is better. It is important you know actual wattage output not PMPO ( Peak music power output) A lot of stereos are rated at PMPO. The higher number sounds great but in reality, the figure is the MAX output and by then the sound is distorting badly. Distortion ruins more speakers than anything else...

Basically you cannot break you woofer with too powerful amp, but you can break it using too weak amp. This is because if you don't have enough watts going to you woofer the cones movement isn't controlled properly. I'm usually using +20% to the woofers RMS and peak power. This will also make the amp last longer because you won't use it at it's peak performance all the time. If possible use manufacturer whose prising policy matches your woofers manufacturers, that way you won't end up with "2000w peak power" cheap amp with real output of 30w. and in the other end cheap woofer won't handle expensive amp with real 600w rms so well, you need to find a midlle way here. Hard to say without knowing the make and model of the woofer.
This is a taste question for some people, and I haven't build a system to match so powerful woofer ever in my life. But I'm pretty sure you won't go wrong with this one.

Strange noises can come from your amplifier or the sub itself. The most likely cause of the strange noise is the speaker just before it dies! If you have been using the sub-woofer at high volume levels then you probably have damaged it. Try testing the sub-woofer using a multimeter(on ohms setting) it should give you a reading from 8 to 4 ohms. Sometimes they may give readings as low as 1 ohm. When testing the speaker/sub you should hear a soft scratchy, thumping or clicking sound. This indicates that the speaker may still be working. If you don't have a multimeter try a 1.5 volt battery (say a AA), DONT USE HIGHER VOLTAGE BATTERIES they may damage the speaker! You will hear a clicking, scratching etc sound from the speaker which may indicate that it is still OK. If the speaker seems OK the problem may be in the amplifier, which I suggest you bring to a professional repairer. When buying speakers and amplifiers make sure the power handling of the speaker is equal to or greater than the amplifier output power. This should stop speakers from getting damaged. Make sure the speaker and amplifier specifications are rated in the same manner ie RMS PMPO Peak. A 100 Watt PMPO speaker will not survive the output of a 100Watt RMS amplifier!

Is the speaker a dual voice coil speaker? If so you can wire it up a couple of diferent ways, go to rockfordfosgate.com they have a woolfer wiring wizard that can show you the different ways to wire for 8 ohm.....4 ohm.....2 ohm....and 1 ohm...I would figure out how to get the most power out of the amp in mono mode, take that ohm load from there and see if you can wire your speaker to match it.

Check the old speakers for its resistance & RMS/PMPO output rating and replace them with a similar rating speaker of the size,as per ur requirement and refit................sodeep

Hello monkey_flea, Your subs will share the amp output. And if you are not careful, you'll end up blowing them. The amp puts out 1300 watts RMS at 2ohms, the subs have an RMS power range of from 75-350 watts, and you'll be driving them with 650 watts each. A better power match would be to series the subs to present an 8ohm final load. This will reduce the output power to a level the subs can handle. Or you could buy 2 more 12.1's and connect them series-parallel for a 4ohm load and each sub would still be getting 325 watts RMS, just about the maximum they are rated to handle. Hope this helps.

Yes it would be possible, acquire a home receiver or amplifier with either a crossover or an equalizer to filter out the high signals for the subs and is should work fine. Of course if the impedance does not match you do not want to blast the sound through them.
