I have a dell inspiron 6000 and it is only 3 years old. When i try to start it, it won't even load. We have tried to reformat it but it won't allow us to do that. I have no idea what happened it, it was working perfectly until 1 day it just stopped turning on.
On ac power when you hit the power button, if there are no lights, it could be the power supply. If there are lights, try starting it without the battery, ac only. If there are lights and it still doesn't start after removing the battery, try a different memory chip. On Dell machines the battery can acquire a dead short causing it to not start. Also if the memory chip/chips have gone out it will cause it not to start. If it still will not start after these three it's a motherboard problem and will most likely have to be replaced.

have you tried replacing the hard drive and then reinstall the xp i have encountered sam problems with dell laptops, plus clean out your fan after you do this there should be better performance.ley me know how this works out for you..
The input jack that is soldered to the motherboard (where the AC jack plugs in) probably has a cold solder joint. Thus the laptop switches from battery to AC power. You can try to have the solder joints re-soldered.
Well the old Dell takes ATA connections. Newer laptops are SATA. Which did you buy?
A new disk drive needs to be partitioned and the operating system needs loaded. Did you do that?
Did you back up all your data to an external device so you can load it on the new disk?
Go to Dells support site, link is below and put in your model laptop, then choose your operating system, there will be a list of available drivers you can download from them. I will try and give you the direct link below. The below is a direct link to Dells modem driver. Copy and paste to your address bar.
Have you tried this: 1. After removing the battery 2. Press and hold the power button for at least 10 sec. 3. Put back the battery 4. Turn it on
if this doesnt work, there could be a problem with your operating system. Try accessing safe mode if you can login .TAP F8 continously on the dell logo screen, and it will open advance boot options. (Just select safe mode) If safe mode boots properly try running system restore to restore it back to the previous date where your computer is still booting to windows. Hope this helps
when your dell is start keep hitting the f8 key then boot into safe mode.do a virus scan.if clean then move down to last knowin good config.if that dont work you may have to reformat ur computer or try repair.
Go to www.support.dell.com and select "I'm looking for drivers and downloads". If you don't have the proper version of Adobe you will be prompted to install it. Once installed return to "drivers and downloads" and enter the "service tag",(serial number) of the 820 laptop. Dell keeps a listing of drivers for every customer's computer they sell. Put on recharging at least half an hour.
Before, try to take a battery out and firmly clean contacts for battery.

Good luck!
You can also pick up the batteries less expensive than most computer places at batteries plus. And yes it sounds as though it is the batteries charge is getting low, especially if it runs fine when the battery is out and you have it plugged in.
