if by "controls", you mean the little icons around the screen, yes I can see them but I can't seem to understand what the mean or how to activate them.

Are you able to view the controls etc., on the screen or is it completely blank?

The reason why I have asked that question is to determine whether its an LCD screen related problem or optical sensor related problem. I remember seeing an advisory where in canon offers to repair all image sensor problems on most of the power shot series cams, free of cost. May be worth a shot.

It could possibly be because after selecting the "disp." (display) button several times the screen goes black. Simply press the "disp" button until you monitor will show what your camera see's.
