Laptop Internet Connection

I have a Dell Inspirion 3800 with a 10 Mbps Lan PC Card. I purchased a router in order to connect my Road Runner Internet service from my desktop to my laptop. My laptop does not respond except for a message saying "Network cable is unplugged." How do I get the Internet on my laptop? Do I need additional equipment? Thank you.

The LAN pc card on you laptop is not recognizing the connection to the router that's why you are getting an erro saying cable is unpluggged. Try to user a different ethernet cable or try the laptop to the modem check if you will still get the same error so that we'll know if its a fault with the lan card or if it's just with the cable.

100 mbps ONLY means connection speed between your laptop and the next device in your network (which is your router). You might want to check in your router is configured to access internet to your provider.

See if the cable from ISP to your router is connected properly.

Not sure what type of internet connection you have, so its hard to advice properly.

Hi Ajay,

The LAN (wired network) connectivity speed/data rate depends upon the networking hardware (Laptop Ethernet Cards, Switch, Router etc.).
To get 1Gbps connectivity you must have 1Gbps ethernet (LAN) card in the laptops. As Dell Latitude D620 has 1Gbps card, the problem could be with the switch or router, which may be having 100Mbps and 1Gbps ports, depending upon the equipment you are using and it is recommended that you check out the its full specification. If you connect laptop to 100Mbps port you can only get 100Mbps speed. To get full speed, it is required to have 1Gbps support at both ends.

Dont forget to rate the solution if it helps!!

How a conect to internet

METHOD 1 - Using Internet connection using DSL or cable connection.
1st. If you wish to connect to the Internet with a LAN cable or a wirelessly and if your computer doesn't have a LAN card or wireless LAN card you need to purchase a LAN card (to configure the wireless router) and if you want a wireless connection you will also need to purchase a wireless LAN card.
2nd. You need to select an Internet Service Provider in your area with a plan and cost to suit your requirements.
3rd. You need to decide what type of broadband connection you need, DSL or cable modem with or without a built-in wireless router, the Internet Service Provider can assist you with this.
5th. The Internet Service Provider can supply these items or advise you what make and model to purchase. They will also provide information on how to connect and setup your Internet connection.

METHOD 2 - Using USB wireless adapter that plugs into the laptop's USB port. It doesn't need a wireless router or a cable or DSL modem.
This is used mostly on laptop computers which allows Internet access anywhere the Internet Service Provide has a wireless transmitter. It uses the G3 mobile system.
This type of service usually costs more and again you need to select an Internet Service Provider that can provide the wireless coverage, the plan and costs that suit your requirements.
Installation and setting up information is supplied by the ISP.

Wireless issues with my Dell XPS/Dimension One desktop

Even if it's a new Dell, you may need to update either the drivers for the wireless card or the BIOS.

Also, verify which protocol your Dell is set to use (i.e. 802.11g, 802.11b, auto-select, etc.). Dell may have fixed to to a slower protocol for compatibility.

Dell Inspirion E1505 internet connection problem

Have you properly entered in all of your network's info into the laptop?  Sometimes security settings can block access to the Wireless network.  Here's a quick way to diagnose network connection.  (Make sure you know the IP address of your router!)
1. open your Command Prompt
2. type in the following "ping (Router IP address example: 192.168.1.1 " after entering the following press enter.  (you should see a series of lines that say how long the packet took to make a round trip...if not, then you have no connection to the wirless network)
3. if the results of the ping test read "100% loss" you know that connection is definately not established.
Your next course of action should be to inspect your laptop's settings and ensure that your laptop can "see" the router.  If your laptop's NIC ( Network Interface Card ) cannot detect the network it is possible that the NIC is bad or your router isn't set to "Broadcast" your SSID ( Service Set Identifier ) aka network.  this following article might be able to assit you in the troubleshooting process more throughly.  I hope this to be of some help to you!

WIRELESS CONNECTION.

First you need to purchase or aquire a wireless router which can send out a wireless signal. Be sure to bring you laptop to the store to ensure you hare busing a router which emitts te right frequecy.

for example, there are laptops whihc have a 802.11b wiress adapter and thos which have a 802.11n whic only works on on a 802.11 n frequency, so please be sure to check with the sales person.

Also, if you are goin withing 100 fee from the router for just in appartment or upstairs or down stairs you will not need a high end system. You may want a middile of the road option no more tha $75 for the router.

You would simply plug in the wireless router to the ethernet cable. It will come with software which would walk you though instructions on how to enable your wireless net card on you laptop and to detect and secure your wirteless router.

Hva e fun.

I suspect your cable modem is looking for the MAC address of your compaq's NIC. if you run IPCONFIG /ALL on the Compaq (Start run, cmd <enter> then IPCONFIG /ALL <enter> , you can get the 12 digit MAC address.

In the router setup, there should be an option to CLONE MAC address, put in the MAC address of the COMPAQ. Then release and renew the IP address in the Router from the cable modem. The router should then get a valid IP address from the cableand you should be able to connect both systems to the router and surf.
