I have a flashing icon on my WRT120N linksys router and when i connect my dsl modem to it, i have no internet connection. How do i fix this?

A router or switch is used to network computers together. A modem is required to convert the network traffic to traverse the appropriate medium broadband, DSL modems etc. So yes you would need a modem to connect to the internet.

At power up the device runs a self test, it take a minute or so. What is it connected to, what is sending the signal, a cable modem, DSL, etc.? If you have cables runing from the Cable modem or whatever, to the linksys, try another cable, OR, reboot the cable modem, unplug, remove battery, if applicable, remove power from the WRT120N, Insert battery into the modem, plug in, wait for the self test, plug in the Linksys, wait for self test. Connect a ethernet cable from the linksys to the computer. Does it connect? Try to connect wirelessly, Does it connect? Is the Linksys secured with a passcode? If you push the reset button , and hold for a minute, in the rear of the device, it will reset the Linksys to default settings. Try to connect. Did the Linksys work at one time? Did you set it up? Is it on a surge protector? Have you had any Electrical storms? Surges? It may be bad, hard to say until you verify all the steps. Who is your internet provider? Have you verified that they are sending a signal? Comcast will verify ,by phone, that the signal is good and run check on the cable modem.

This is too involved to just post your router settings. I would recommend reading up on how to "cascade" your router or to make your Modem/Router act as a bridge.

The dlink will need to have its DNS disabled and have the Linksys do the DNS. Then the LInksys will be using the Dlink as its host. you may be better off seeing if you can make the dlink run in Gateway mode instead of router mode.

Then see how to implement the cascading router with your particular situation and WAN IP.

If you connect the computer directly to the AT&T modem , it work. That means the modem is working properly.
AT&T is DSL connection type. the DSL connection works on 2 different modes. 1) DHCP 2) PPPOE.
Now you will need to connect the modem and the computer to the router. open the set up page of the rotuer.
The set up page is the page where you can change the settings of the router.

Try these steps:

1. Shut down the DSL/Cable modem

1. Power up the router (no cables just yet).

1. Power up the modem and wait for the appropriate lights (power, ethernet, and activity – something along these lines)

1. Connect the modem and router with an ethernet cable (if there is a WAN port on the router make sure to put the cable in this port).

1. Connect Port 1 on the router to the network card on the computer using an ethernet cable and check to see there is a light at the correct port.

1. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. Input your routers id (usually an IP address or an URL) in the browsers address bar and press Enter. The address bar is where you would normally see, for example, http://www.google.ca If you don't know the IP address (such as 192.168.1.1) or the URL, try going to the manufacturers web site and downloading a manual.

1. Now, a window will open asking for a user name and password (these are given to you in the instructions of the router). For example, Dlink sets up some of their routers as, username: admin and leave the password field blank then press OK.

1. Now you are in the configuration page of your router (wireless most probably). Here you can set the encryption, new passwords etc… If your not comfortable doing these on your own most routers have a wizard that you can follow.

1. If everything goes alright and the settings are successful you can now try the wireless connection. Go to a machine with a wireless card, right

1. At the computer with the wireless connection, make sure the connection is on You might be trying to connect to the network by using either the application that came with the router or windows wireless configuration. Right click the icon in the system tray and “view available networks”. If it comes up in a window saying “Windows is not setup for wireless networks” then you must right click on the correct icon in the tray.
2. Now, in the list of available networks, click on the name of your network Click on "connect" and it should ask for your security id (the encryption code). Put in the code (usually twice) and click connect or OK. It should now be "acquiring anip address" and in a few minutes it should be connected.

Verifying Internet Connection
Connect the Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure that the Internet connection is active. If not, contact your Internet Service Provider.

192.168.1.1 than enter ur login & password

than reset the router to fabric setting when done go back in the router and configure it as u like to have it

unplug your DSL modem. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.

Make sure the router is connected to a DSL modem. Lately I have seen DSL modems connected to offices that are really routers. If thats the case it may not be talking because the DSL is address the gateway with the same address as the router.

The best way to test this is to see what happens when you disconnect your linksys router and type in http://192.168.0.1
in internet explorer.

If the DSL modem screen appears, it's configured as a router.

Then you will have to take the linksys router and turn it into a switch with a wireless access point. I
