Most Generac generators have a lever for the choke that pulls out. So if the generator is being started for the first use or cold you should choke when starting . Let it run for 30-45 sec. then push it in . Once the engine has been run or warm you dont need to choke every time when starting .

Start the engine

I assume you refer to a 6500 watt Honda, if it's electric start/and manual(pull cord) First supply a 12 volt battery /if you haven't put fresh gas in it do the best you can to remove all the old gas from the tank and you should find drain screws and small hoses on the lower part of the carburetor. After completing this step add about 1 gallon or so of fresh gas, remove the air filter system from the face of the carburetor ,with a small squirt bottle put a tea spoon or so of gas into the of the carb, close the choke and turn the key, if it fires let it run with the choke closed for only a few seconds then slowly open the choke fully, if the engine stalls close the choke and start the engine again do not leave the choke closed for extended periods as this will cause engine flooding and spark plug failure. Also be sure you have inspected the existing spark plug to be sure it's clean if there is any question about the plug change it.

Yamaha 5200d it starts and runs 2/3 minutes and shuts down oil is full low oil lite does not light up carb is clean

This generator is equipped with an auto choke. What is likely occurring is as the engine warms up the choke is returning to the normal choke off run position leaning the mixture two lean to maintain operation of the motor.

This is occurring because the residual fuel that was left in the carburetor has evaporated and the gum residue is reducing the fuel flow through the carburetor. When the choke is applied the mixture is rich enough to support running and as the choke returns on its own to the run position the mixture leans out and the generator stalls..

Override the choke when the engine is starting to falter to confirm the problem. Continuing to attempt to run the engine possibly adding a carburetor cleaner additive to the gas will likely return the unit to normal operation.

If attempting to enrich the mixture by applying choke when the engine begins to falter does not work then a fuel flow problem to the carburetor may be the root cause. I would look for a plugged fuel filter or restricted fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor. What is happening is when the unit is at rest the carburetor is filling with gas and as it is running because of a restricted fuel flow the level lowers in the carburetor bowl resulting in a mixture to lean to run.

I have a coleman 2500 gas generator when I try to start it on choke after I prime it. It starts and runs for about 5 sec and then stops. I replaced the old gas with new gas any ideas?

sounds like the carburetor got gummed up with gas being left in it over the winter/not being used in a few months. You may have to take it apart and clean it up with carburetor cleaner, possible the needle and float may have to be replaced, good luck Tim

When I start my generator it just lugs and shakes and will not get going. I have a UST 2300w generator modle GG2300. thanks jeffery

OK, you have a hard to find info on model. My first thought is that your choke is still on.
Does it have a manually activated choke? If so you know what to do, after she kicks, turn it off.
If it is one of the new Auto-choke units you may need to find the choke linkage and disengage
it that way. I have asked for a manual for your from UTS. We will see what they send, or dont!
As with all engines, if left in storage for long periods of time, use fuel stabilizer and try and start
the engine every 30 days and let it run for 10-15 minutes just to warm up and keep everything moving.

I cant get my coleman powermate 5000 MAXA ER to start. i have changed the oil, refilled the gas, changed the spark plug, and tried using starter fluid. what else can i try?

It's almost certainly gummed up gas in the carburetor. Get some carb cleaner, and some spray instant start. Drain the gas from the tank and put a small amount of 50/50 carb cleaner and gas in the tank. Remove the air cleaner, open the choke, spray a little instant start into the carb and start it. It may fire just a couple of time. Keep the choke on to try to pull a bit of gas through the carb. You may have to do this a few times. Once you can tell some gas is flowing, open the choke slowly to keep it running until you use up the 50/50 mix. Then try a small amount of straight gas in the tank to be sure it works right, before you refill the tank. Make sure you use a stabilizing additive in any gas that you store for more than a month. good luck, Al K

Will not start when cold if you ues starting fluid and get it running it will stay running until its shut off but if it sits and cools down for approx 1 hr it wont start the fuel valve was just replaced...

Sounds like the choke is not closing. Perhaps it has become detached from the manual throttle.
A simple test you can perform is to let it cool for an hour or more, remove the air filter and cover the air intake with your hand (making your hand a manual choke). If it starts right up, then the real choke is the problem.
There are two valves that you can see from the top of the carb. The one closest to the air cleaner is the choke. The other one is the throttle. Both valves operate through 90 degrees of rotation. The choke should close all of the way with the lever in the start position and be open all of the way with the lever in any other position.

Generator will not run unless i use starting fluid.

You have a fuel problem. Fuel filter clogged? Carbuerator may need cleaning. Is there a hidden fuel shutoff valve? I have left mine closed... it is embarassing but it happens. I assume you put the choke on initially...

I have a Generac XL4000. It rill start but not run right.

If the area you live in has alcohol added to their unleaded gas, then you will probably need to rekit the carbuerator. Also check the spark arrestor for plugging up. Try to find a non alcohol, off road unleaded gas for your generator.

It starts fine and runs on choke but not off choke

It sounds like you are not getting enough gas. I think it's the diaphragm, When you take it off of the choke diaphragm controls the gas flow, apparently yours is just shutting down. It's very inexpensive, and very easy to replace. Good Luck :)
