I presume the VGA cable is OK and the external monitor is good.
On the "F" keys, (function Keys) at the top of your keyboard, one will have a diagremme of a laptop next to an empty screen, maybe F5, press and hold the FN ket whilst pressing the F5 key.
That will toggle between internal, both and external monitors.
For more information, go to the Dell website and download as required.
Hope that helps.

The monitor keeps making crackling noises

Try relocating the monitor to rule out external interference, if no the monitor will need to be checked for bad connections such as bad solder joints.

The monitor should have a wire that goes to the green colored input plug on the back of the PC.

I am using a MacBook with an Acer Monitor with a mini connection. The monitor shows the start up screen of the MAC but known of the icons nor does it reflect what is on the MacBook while I am working.

This is a very simple solution, fortunately. The default behavior of an external monitor connected to a portable Mac is to act as extra space, effectively extra screen "real estate," where you can move windows or do whatever else you need to.
Verify this by moving your mouse to the right-hand side of your screen, and then keep going - you'll see your mouse appear on the external monitor.

If you want to have the external monitor reflect exactly what you are doing on the primary monitor, simply go to Apple menu > system preferences > displays > arrangement and check 'mirror displays.'

And that's all there is to it!

I Have a Peavey XR 600B mixer. There are only 2 inputs in the rear for speakers. I want to add more speakers to be used as monitors or just have extra speakers. How can this be done? I only have...

First off it's outputs to your speakers. If you had an extra set of powered or amplified speakers you could "Y" cable your speaker outputs. Your passive speakers won't work without an amp. You really need powered speakers or an amp for your extra speakers. (if you had powered/amp'd speakers you could run them off one of you "aux" out for monitors. Do not daisy chain your speakers connecting twi together, you'll change the resistance/ohms and damage your speakers. Trust me, I do this for a living.

Please confirm if the lights are blowing on your notebook,
If you have any extra monitor try to connect that to the VGA Port of your Laptop. and switch it on. If display is coming on that Monitor it means the Laptop LCD having some issues.

The USB ports on the left side of the monitor do not work. Why?

Have you connected a USB master wire cooming from the monitor to the PC? Check your installation manual. These extra ports sure are conveinent, but they are simply a hub and a hub needs a source.
