Refrigerator I changed the gasket around my refrigerator door but now I can't seem to be able to keep it shut on it's own. It is a Whirlpool probably from around 1993 I think. It was here when we bought the house 7 years ago. The strip on the bottom was all rotten so I got the part number and got one that is suppose to be the same type. It is different and there is magnetic in the thing but, the magnet part doesn't seem strong enough to keep the door shut or I just can't seem to get the door leveled properly. It stays open about an inch or two. I was trying to save money by fixing it myself, but my husband is telling me to call an expert to come over to fix it. I don't want to put any more money into it. I was trying to save us from buying a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    After paying $68.00 more out for a service call,(Gasket was

    $60.00,previously bought) I now have a cold refrigerator. the service man used a heat gun and ran it all over the outside of the gasket and stuck inside the vent hole from the freezer while the fridge door was shut. This brought back the memory and it actually sealed around the door frame. If I knew that was what I needed to do, I would have. Everyone mentions kinks. I really didn't have kinks in the gasket. I used a hairdryer and removed the one that I had. I didn't realize I needed to really warm up the gasket so that it was more plyable and soft. It would have taken hours with the hair dryer, but I wasted hours trying to adjust the door hinges. Oh, well, I am an expert now. If anyone needs their gasket changed, let me know. LOL

Use a hair dryer to heat the gasket up and gently pull all the bends and wrinkles outs. this takes a tremindous amount of patients even with us techs, so work slowly. once you have that done and the gasket shift to form the door seal put a light coat of vasaline all the way aroung the gasket then push the door shut making sure you gasket is touching the door seal all the way around it mat take going over it again with the hair dryer with the door closed to get it to form correctly, once formed don't open the door for a min. of 4 to 8hrs if it can be avoided and after that make sure you close the door and it seals for the next week to 2 weeks which is about the time it take for it to cure properly

Whirlpool regrigerator door auto locks
As far as I'm aware, refrigerator doors don't have auto locks on them. What you're describing sounds like the door has a fantastic seal from a temperature change between the inside of the fridge and the room around it. When there is a drastic change, (usually warm) the refrigerator seal will seem to stick. This will wear off over time, or when the temperature changes.

NO WAY!!!! DONT GET HIM TO DO IT!!!

A door gasket costs around $50.00 and takes me around an hour or so to change. Go to another service technician.

Water is leaking in the fridge; mostly probably coming from the freezer
Hello,


Move the refrigerator out from the wall and look for the location of the leak.

Step 2
Check the side panels and the seals around the door for beads of "sweat." This could indicate a condensation problem.

Step 3
Check the floor. A puddle there could indicate a missing or cracked drip pan, or a leak in the water line that feeds your ice maker.

Step 4
Check for water seeping from the front of the freezer or the refrigerator. This could indicate your defrost drain is plugged or your ice maker is leaking.

Fixing a condensation problem
Step 1
Check that the doors shut correctly. Hold each door about halfway open, then let go. If the doors don't shut completely, adjust the screw legs on the front of the refrigerator so the unit tilts back a bit. With adjustable pliers, turn each leg one revolution clockwise. Recheck the doors and, if necessary, repeat the process until they shut securely.

Step 2
Inspect the door gaskets. Look for debris that may keep the doors from shutting. Also check for cracks or gaps in the gaskets that could allow the cold air to seep out. If you find debris, clean the gaskets with warm, soapy water. If you find cracks or gaps, you'll need to replace the gaskets (see How to Fix a Refrigerator That Cools Poorly).

Step 3
If your refrigerator is equipped with a door-frame heater that evaporates condensation, make sure the heater is turned on. The switch should be located with your other refrigerator controls

Delfield Refrigerator/Freezer Condensation forming outside door seals
I would expect at the very least a heater circuit around the freezer door. Some of the commercial units also have sprung doors to keep the doors firmly shut which you could check by opening the doors. Door heater circuits are normally very reliable and it would be worth checking the voltage is getting to them, they are also a pain to change out. Hope this helps.
