Windows 98 Operating System CD

This is because the windows startup files are damaged / deleted. Please reboot your computer by inserting the windows 98 bootable disk into CD/DVD drive and selecting the option as "R" repair.

In short you will be fixing the master boot record (MBR) for the operating system.

that should run xp just fine but if you still want to go to windows 98 you should know all the software out there isent supported by windows 98 anymore so its going to cause you more problems then you would like but if you STILL want to do it

you need a floppy disk and it needs to be formated to a win98 boot disk make sure theres oakcdrom.dll in those files on the floppy disk put it in and reboot to dos from there go to the cd rom drive  normaly you would type     cd D:\setup.exe     that will start the install as long as you have the cd in GOOD LUCK

go to the windows(as your windows backup stored) directory and
just type setup and press Enter

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

Windows 98 isn't supported anymore. Are you using a different operating system on your computer?
