Garmin Nuvi 750 car cradle/charger does not charge the unit. USB charger works, so not the battery. Replaced the cigarette lighter jack and still does not work. Problem must be in the dash mount cradle or the 25 pin socket in the bottom of the unit. Does anyone know the pinout schematic for the 25 pin car cradle charger so I can test it? Many thanks.

Hi tbrick

if you dont have the original charger, the 750 take a special car charger because of the traffic feature...it has a flat end about 3/4" to 1" long that fits in the cradle, but you can use a garmin usb charger, you just wont be able to use the traffic feature.

if thats a little confusing ( i tend to do that) i try and explain it another way.

if you think you need or want one of those chargers, just post back to me.

if its an oem garmin charger and the green light is on and still wont charge, then the problem is most likely the power port on the back of your garmin...if its not the factory charger, get one for a garmin..that should solve your problem...if not, let me know

@yahoo.comgarmin 750 charges through usb port but not through car charger/cradle?

Check the fuse in the charger plug. The plug that goes into the cigarette lighter socket has a ring up near the end of it. To open it you unscrew the ring. You'll find the fuse inside and it probably needs replacing. Otherwise it may be the cigarette lighter that's not providing power.

The charger/traffic receiver glows green but it does not charge the unit. How can i test whether the fault is a, the charger, b the cradle or c, the unit

hi,

1st of all let me say im on my 3 cradle now for my 760 because the connection inside the cradle where it mounts to the board is pretty poor.

since you said the traffic/charger has the green light lite, that means the charging part of it is working.

you can verify if its the cradle or the connection on the bottom of the gps where the cradle mounts by using the usb cable supplied with your garmin.

plug it in for a while, then check the battery meter after you unplug it..if its charging, the meter would have risen beyond what it was before you tried to charge it. the same can be done with a regular garmin charger (the one that uses the usb connection for the car charger to charge it)

My Garmin will not start up.

it sounds like your battery within the GPS Unit is died. You need to charge it somehow. Keep it connected to the car charger for around 30 mins and unit should turn on. Do not keep it on while it is being charged

The cradle no longer charges the garmin in my vehicle. It's not charging anymore. Nuvi 750

Sometimes, if the Garmin GPS battery is allowed to fully discharge, it would require charging directly via USB cable connected to a PC or Mac before it would accept a charge for the cigarette lighter again. Try connecting this way for 4 - 8 hours or more before going forward.

Check the cigarette lighter plug in another "known good" lighter socket / vehicle to help rule out a defective socket. A socket without power indicates anything from needing to change a "simple to replace" fuse - or a bigger problem - damaged wiring in the vehicle (if the socket is used to light cigars & cigarettes - vacuum the socket out to remove ash and tobacco that may collect inside). Trying the GPS elsewhere helps eliminate possible problems with the socket. If it doesn't work elsewhere, depending on the plug that goes into the socket, it too may have a built-in fuse. Check the plug for an exposed fuse - or see if the tip unscrews to provide access to a fuse inside. If unsure, the tech Support people at Garmin are a great source for free help.

Lastly, dirt or grime on the "cradle to GPS" connection or "cable to cradle" connection could be causing the failed connection. In short - carefully inspect all points of connection and remove any deposits found.

Charging the battery in Nuvi 760

1) Check the cigarette lighter is working by plugging in the lighter unit and see if it gets hot. If it doesn't then it is possible the fuse has blown.

2) You can plug the unit into a PC using the USB cable and if there is a fault you will get a message on the screen about 'USB over-current' but it shouldn't damage the computer.

If it runs/charges using the PC and (1) is OK then you may have a problem with the cigarette lighter - cradle cable or a problem with the cradle itself.

First time use / battery charge

The Nuvi units are short on battery life and therefore Garmin has given you a connector other then USB to power your unit while in a car. You need to carry that. It's just a design flaw. If you try to rely on the battery of your Garmin Nuvi, you have less than 2 hours even on a full charge. And carrying the USB adapter which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket won't allow your unit to run while charging. so you need to take the adapter charger bracket that comes with the unit if you need it for longer trips.

Internal battery won't charge

Common issue. Steps to troubleshoot/solve:
1. Pull off face, press reset tab.
2. If unit wont turn on or if turns off immediately, connect to home computer using mini usb on side of gps (any usb cord that fits will do). This will charge the internal gps battery, which is discharged.
3. You will not be able to see the gps charge indicator while the usb cord is plugged into the unit. To check charge level, disconnect it, turn it on, and note the large "battery" icon.
4 Do you have a dead internal battery? If the gps holds a charge from your computer usb port, you don't.
5. If you have a dead battery, Google DIY replacement. With some soldering it can done for $15 total.
6. If you don't have a dead battery, the issue is charging from the cigarette lighter socket. Your car socket may have blown a fuse (check car manual). Your charger unit may have blown a fuse (unscrew the tip, check fuse inside). Also, some car sockets don't work when the ignition is off. Test yours.
7. There is a good chance the connection of the charger wire to the gps cradle is the problem. Fiddle with that. Replacement cradles are available for the c340 at about $25.
8. If your unit is not charging from the cradle/socket, buy a 12v usb cord. Plug into socket and into usb port of the gps. This is a workaround or alternative to buying a new cradle.
9. IMPORTANT: observe the "battery" icon while driving, esp. if you have doubts about charging. Basically, if you can see the icon, you're not connected to an outside (car or computer) power source. That is, if you can see the battery-charge indication, it means your battery is currently discharging and unless you get another power source to work it will be dead in a few hours.
