You will need to open the ink cartridge door and let the print carriage go to the middle. Then, remove al ink cartridges and lift the latch to remove the printhead. This video shows another Canon printer, but same concept:

SOURCE: Alignment of printhead on Canon Pixma iP4600

This is simply a case of the ink tanks not being pressed in hard enough. They do click in, as the manual instructs but, unless they are fully pressed in top and bottom, this problem occurs. It's a shame that the Canon manuals and even the support centre do not mention this simple solution.

Why would you want to do that? There is no good reason to do that.

Flashing green orange lights

The Canon service info is:
B200/P10 - Orange and green light blinking 10 times Description: A service error has occurred. Resolution: 1. Turn off the printer. 2. Disconnect the power cable. 3. Open the printer cover. 4. Check for any orange protective tape or white polystyrene and remove if necessary. 5. Check that there are no foreign objects in the printer (such as a paper clip) and remove if necessary. 6. Close the cover. 7. Reconnect and turn on. If the above solution has not resolved your error, please contact your nearest Canon authorised service facility using the link at the top of the page.

The error code is usually given for a foreign object present in the print head carriage path, so check at both ends for a crumpled up wedge of paper. If nothing is found, it is most likely that your print head has an over-heating problem and is dying

What is the best cleaning chemical to clean the print head of a canon ip4600? I bought acetone but it does not get the ink off my fingers so I am thinking not the right cleaning chemical. The large black...

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent inkdrying out in the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer thanreplace the print head.

How do you remove the print head on a ip4600

Hello,

First, go to: IP4600 Support.

If the Support & Service tab is not selected, click on it.

In the box for entering a question, simply type remove printhead and then click Search.

In the results there will be one titled "How do I reseat/remove the printhead?" Click on that link. A tutorial will open up giving step by step instructions. Basically you have to remove all the cartridges, lift the lock lever, and remove the printhead. The tutorial shows pictures so it will be an easy task.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I get error 1401 - print heads not installed (properly). WRONG!

Make sure you removed all the shipping tape from the bottom of the cartridges and that you installed the cartridges in the correct bays.

Canon Pixma iP4600 not printing cyan

I had the same problem and I finally FIXED IT. I first tried replacing cartridges - no good, I then took the print head out, dismantled it and washed every component, no good. I then noticed that there were small streaks of blue on the paper when I tried to print a blue image so I worked out that the blue ink is getting through, but very slowly (yours might not be getting through at all but don?t worry this should still fix it). So I got a very thin pin and pushed it into the cyan pad on the print head creating a thin channel for the ink. Tried to print again, perfect, blue now working. Hope this helps - remember, you do this AT YOUR OWN RISK, there is no guarantee this will work for you, it worked for me but there is the obvious risks that you may break your printer. I did it because it was broken as far as I was concerned and I had nothing to lose if it broke completely, you must make that choice yoursel

I can not open ij utility to clean the head, also it doesn't print on CDs. Seems like not talking to my Mac book osx tiger.

If you hold the resume button until the power light blinks once, it will clean the heads, hold the button for two blinks and it will print a nozzle check print. You may have to download a new driver from canon website.

Canon PIXMA iP4600 - error 6A80

Hello someone else here had this problem, this is what he posted: "Same problem with a Canon MP540 fresh from the box. Turned out to be the print head unit was not returning fully to the home position ie extreme right. My Fix : When the scanning unit cover is raised the print head unit moves left for access, look in the vacated area to the right, in particular the small black sponge where the head normally parks. I found a small spring jammed in beside the sponge, removed it and all is well. Don't know what the spring was meant to do but everything is working fine without it.On the MP540 the head unit now glows red, presumably meaning all is well... "

Canon S530D-Have cleaned nozzles, changed ink tanks ,no printing of any sort

HI,
No I haven't fix the problem. However I've been doing all the cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. I finally gave myself a x'mas present. I bought a new printhead for the S530D. It's working perfectly now. I was tossing whether to get a new IP4600 or a new head, finally decided on the latter. Simply I can't get after market cartridges for the IP4600. The cartridges for the IP were way too expensive at this moment and not knowing whether the claims for the print numbers are accurate. Perhaps readers may be able to collaborate the claims for the IP4600 or IP4500.
Regards and seasons greetings & a happy new year 2009,
