I have an HP Officejet 6500 and it starts up with a paperjam warning. I've checked all locations for paper and none is in the machine, but I noticed that the ink carriage will not move when the door is opened. I also notice that upon starting the printer, it makes a clunk sound as if it's trying to move the carriage and it is stuck. I've tried moving the carriage by hand with power off or on and it seems jammed all the way to the right under the plastic cover. Any ideas to resolve it?

check paper loading area and printing area is there any paper jammed? remove any viable objects, If printer in warranty surrender to HP. check paper path sensor...
1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
2. Press and hold the # key and the number 6 and plug the printer back in all at the same time.
3. Release the keys once the printer is already turned on.
If the printer takes the paper but only crumples it. Do the Reset for the 2nd time.
Hi I also had this issue. no paper anywhere but still the message. I found out that it was also not possible to move the carriage. I teared the device apart. found out that the ink cleaning mechanism was so filled with old and sticky ink. I cleaned it all, what a job..wear gloves I can now advise..and then it start working again...
Unplug the power cord and open the cover and remove all the cartridge and try to look I inside around the roller and try to manually roll the roller and if you can see the paper try to pull is slowly. Have a nice day and do not forget to rate please...!
One word SENSOR.. it "Thinks" there is a problem, in saying that are you sure, there isn't a shard of paper somewhere in it? If still NO, then it's going to have to go in for a repair.
It's possible that a little piece of paper tore off and is wedged all the way to the right, and is hidden by the print heads. I saw this happen on a 3210. I don't recall how to move the heads to the left side, and I don't have access to the on line docs, because I'm trying to solve a problem with the driver right now, but check instructions for print head replacement.
