I can't find a reset button on a Garmin NUVI 205w! NO BUTTOM reset even though it says it should have in the manual! I tried the holding the power button for several seconds, I even tried holding the buttom right of the screen, STILL NOTHING!!! :( I just bought it, never even got to use it. When I turn it on it asks me to "press the dot" and when I do it gets stuck in that one place and wouldn't feel the touch! It's just stuck!

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 350 Touch Screen unresponsive

The touch screen lays on top of the LCD display. It has its own flex cable that plugs into the main board. It is possible for the LCD display to work fine while the touch screen does not. They are two separate parts and work independently!

If your touch screen all of a sudden quit working, I would ask did you ever drop it?

I have repaired many Nuvi's with a non-functioning touch screen. I can't speak for every instance but the ones i took apart, the flex screen cable was loose from the main board.

Don't attempt to fix this yourself unless you know what your doing. Email me at ks3r at sharc dot net if your interested in me repairing your Nuvi at a reasonable price. I have references.

SOURCE: nuvi 205w LCD screen replacement needed.

Your only reasonable solutions are:

1) Send it back to Garmin for repair, which will probably cost you more than the unit is worth, or...

2) Check CraigsList or other places for good deals. The prices on these things have been in nose-dive mode for months and you're liable to find a very good deal for very little money. (I just bought a StreetPilot C330 for $50 from CraigsList last week.)

SOURCE: garmin 205w nuvi cannot unlock

Ok so I decided I was going to return this thing tomorrow after hours of frustration, so I decided to get crazy with it and then figured out something that seems to have worked (will probably still exchange it for a Magellan or something other than Garmin though).

It's gonna sound crazy, but I opened up the Garmin drive on my computer (Mac, so not sure how this works on PC), and deleted everything I could see (not hidden files). EVERYTHING.

I then went ran Disk Utility and reformated the "Hard Drive" (on PC I would guess your able to do the same somehow). It still ran after that, but obviously could not find maps (since I just wiped every trace of a map away).

Next step, I ran Garmin Map Manager and transfered map for my state (AZ) (I have the latest map update saved on my computer, so I'm guessing Manager used that). Unplugged from comp, powered up, and voila! I will need to download my voices and vehicles again, but hey at least it's working again.

Gps not picking up charging, goes on for a few second and turns off! Gps screen turns blank or fades aways What do i need to do???

Hello,

Doing a soft reset on the nuvi will usually get the nuvi up and running.
If there is a reset button on the bottom, press and hold it until the nuvi powers back on. If it does not have the reset button on the bottom, slide and hold the power switch to the left for at least 10 seconds.
Also running the Garmin WebUpdater and reloading the latest update will resolve most issues.
Download and Install WebUpdater.

Hard Reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W

Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data)has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.

I hope that helps.

We have a Garmin Nuvi 205W GPS. Was plugged into car outlet when it went to a black dot display. Nothing happened when blk dot was pressed. Now we can't get it to turn on at all.

Have you tried resetting the 205W. There is a reset button on the bottom of some of the units if not power off the unit and then hold the power button for about 10 seconds till it starts, it should go through a start up and then reboot itself. See page 42 of manual. I will attach a link to the manual, click here.

There is no reset button at the bottom where is it?

Hi cloriaj,

There should be a reset button on the back righthand side of your unit.

The Garmin Nuvi 205W and most other 200 series GPS receivers are normally reset as follows:

The reset button is located on the right rear-backside of the unit. Press a blunt non-metallic object or a cut off toothpick into the small hole and hold for approximately 15 seconds. The unit should do a fresh reboot. Sometimes these GPS units can be reset by sliding the Power key to the left for 10-15 seconds to completely shut the unit down. Then, do the same procedure for 10-15 seconds again, to power it back on.

It would be best to assure the unit has external power, and hopefully a full battery charge, for best results. Also you can download a complete manual from this link for more info:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/nuvi205_OwnersManual.pdf

Let me know how this turns out, and if I can help you further.

Regards,
Bill

My new Garmin nuvi 205w gps is frozen on the screen where you agree to not program it while driving. It does not have a reset button and I can't get it open. Is there any way to unfreeze it?

Hi,
Can you power it down? If so, you can try to reset it by doing the following:
While powering it up, keep holding your thumb on the lower right corner of the screen. Keep holding until you see "Do you want to erase all user data?" Tap "yes".
Hope it helps, please let me know.
Thanks

  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power

  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON

Screen asks to do i want to erase data? how do I clear this?

Hi

You can reset your Nuvi by pushing the RESET button on the bottom of the unit. If your Nuvi does not have a RESET button, then slide the Power key to the on/off position and hold it for 8-10 seconds which will reset the unit. Please check this User Manual for future assistance.
