Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

    You have absolutely made my week!!!! What a genius. This completely fixed this issue I have been fighting for 3 solid days now. Thank you so much for posting this so the (just a little above) average person can fix their own computers without incurring a huge bill.
    Sincerely,
    Cory

Dell Inspiron 1420 is not able to read empty cds or DVDS. My I go to properties it shows empty space as 0. When I try to burn a Cd it says " Insert a blank CD"

Stephen buddy, we need to talk. I do NOT understand anything you are trying to describe. Okay, so you installed a FRESH Operating System and now it is NOT recognizing your DVD-rom, right? Okay, restart the computer and let Windows load up fully. Check Control Panel and check your list of Devices. Sometimes, when you re-install and O.S., you may have to update the firmware or drivers for certain devices.

Base system device found on dell 1420 inspiron laptop

You can download the device drivers from Dell WEB site,the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop,better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on thebottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Taglabel is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages,the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where thespecific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you selectthe Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on thislink to download the drivers: - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
