Freezer Problem I have a Frigidaire upright freezer (Model LFFU1465DW6) that is a couple of years old that is located in my garage in Houston, TX (garage temperature is about 100F). A few months ago and then again yesterday, it quit cooling and the temperature within the freezer got high enough for the food to begin defrosting (50F+). I unplugged the unit, waited a couple of hours, plugged it back in and it started to freeze again. I don?t recall now if the compressor was running or not, but the power light was on. Any suggestions?

Hello Rebecca - The styrofoam and wooden pallet attached to the bottom is part of the shipping material and it is recommended to be removed. If you decide to leave it attached it should not cause any damage, however keep in mind that it might trap moisture under the unit and cause corrosion.

I have had the same problem with my frigidaire/electrolux upright freezer... I am researching to see if there is a pattern. Once or twice a year for the past few years, the freezer defrosted itself. I found the outside of the unit to be VERY hot to the touch around the time that this occurred.
We typically unplug it for a chunk of time when this happens and then replug it. It has always begun working again.
Sadly, we have lost many groceries and have had to clean many bloody meat messes as a result of this. ANYONE buying this freezer should save their receipt... That way, they can return it or have it repaired when it fails. I hate to think of sending all of these failing monstrosities to the landfill... =(

Locate what is making the noise. There is a fan in the freezer behind the rear cover inside. There is a fan underneath accessed from the rear behind the cardboard backing. The compressor is also there with a starter/overload relay which could make the noise.

There is a curing process for the foam used to insulate these. It can give off a pungent odor until it is fully cured. Only experienced it a couple times in the last 20 years. eric

Hi: It sounds like you bought a frost free freezer as it has a fan. The fan will come on to circulate the air. It will not necessarly run continuosly. The noise is most likely coming from the fan. I sold Frigidaire freezers for years and they are noisy compared to a refridgerator. If you think it is louder than it was when you bought it, I would replace the circulating fan. Also look at the back wall for frost as it could be a bad defrost heater blocking it with ice. Most likely just the fan though. Since it's in a detached garage,and you won't have to put up with the noise inside your house, it could run a while before failing. The fact it's getting cold is a very good sign.Also as you asked 2'nd, a freezer is ok in an unheated garage. Don't put a refrigerator in there. Unless It is a Whirlpoll Gladiator that is designed for such applications. Use www.searspartsdirect.com to find out where the fan is if you feel it is necessary to replace it. Its not a tough job if you are handy. Their shipping is expensive so you might want to buy it locally.

We ahve a two year old Frrigidaire Freezer. every year same time it seems to correct itself(?), like self defrosting etc, and takes a long time come back to its cooling level. This is made in brazil G series. Please help.
