Have a PSW-D112 sub woofer that needs a new amp. Repair facility says original amp took a catastrophic power surge and it's toasted. JBL says repair parts not available. Please advise on source for compatible replacement plate amp...........Thanks

Or you could prepare for the worst but live in the moment and wait til it dies. You have time on your side. Plus, you could always use it as a passive sub if you have a separate amplifier. I did that with a Klipsch KSW-12 when my second copy blew its amp.

It is the Class D power amplifier module that JBL uses a lot in the powered sub-woofer, they are very unreliable and hard or impossible to get.
I had modified them to use linear power amp IC instead.

Your sub should turn on into standby mode when plugged into AC power without being attached to the receiver. If it does not follow the list below. If it does, the sub needs a signal from your receiver via either by line-level (RCA) or the speaker wires to turn on out of standby. Ensure that the cable or wires going to your sub is in fact sending a signal while the receiver is on. To Test, (speaker wires) hook up a different known working speaker; (line-level) Some receivers have a menu option to turn the LFE output on and off, ensure that it is on and producing a signal.

Diagnose the problem:
1) Remove all wiring to/from the unit except for the AC plug (use a different known working AC outlet), will it turn on? If so the other outlet is not working.
2) Remove the woofer, does the amp have a fuse that need to be changed? Change the fuse. If it blows again after replacing and turning back on, the speaker is blown; go to #4.
3) Unplug the woofer from the amp, does it turn on? If so, go to #4.

Are you not sure the wires came off? If they're off, reconnect them and get back to us. Absolute polarity doesn't matter. You can always reverse the phasing with the external Phase control.

When you say you replaced the fuse, was that a wild guess or was the fuse really blown?

That model is known to have issues with the amps.Your problem is caused by a couple of components on the board shorting out.If you pull the amp out you will find on the large board behind the speaker terminal a couple of burned components.

The easiest fix is to buy a Bash 300w amp from Parts Express and replace the original amp.The Bash amp fits pretty well except that it is about an inch shorter.You can fill the hole with some mdf and have a sub that actually performs better than the original and with less heat build up as it is digital.Hope this helps,it's not complicated really.

Hi Im a Certified Repair technician, I seen few problems with this unit, there is a amplifier module inside this unit, is really hard to find since JBL discontinued this almost immediately.
Sorry no really worth to bother........

I would suggest to check the rectifiers first, very unlikely that the capacitors became shorted.

If it is fused check to see if the fuse is blown... Start with power and work you way down from there.
Power to the sub.
Signal to the sub
Cabling to sub
Check the speaker itself to see if it is good.

The fuse is designed to protect the circuit and prevent fire. When a fuse blows it is because it is getting to much current through it.
In some cases it could be because you replaced the fuse with one that did not meet the specs of the required fuse, there are different types of fuses and you should always replace with exactly the same type of fuse.

Do not replace with a higher Amp fuse, you could end up frying the amp at least. It's not a safe thing to do since there is an off chance of fire from using the wrong fuse.

If you have the right type of fuse installed and it is still blowing, then refer the unit to a qualified service center for repair, or look for a new replacement Amp.

THE FILTERS /FILTRES ON YOUR SPEAKERS ARE TORN OR DAMAGED. IF YOU STILL HAVE WARRENTY ON THEY FROM JBL YOU CAN RETURN THEM FOR NEW ONES, PROVIDING THAT IS COVERED. IF NOT. I PERSONALLY RECOMMEND YOU BUY YOU SOME NEW ONES. REPAIRING WOULD BE OK, BUT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN VERY QUICKLY.
