Printed copies have ghost images on them. I have never had this problem before., It looks like the image printed twice - once fine and then faint horizontal lines, sometimes some of the previously printed...

1) try doing a full clean from within the menu on the printer, or within the computer software
2) You need to perform a half test. Put a sheet of paper on the manual feeder and do a config page from the information menu on the printer. When the back edge of the paper enters the printer, quickly open the toner door to stop the printing. Now remove the toner cartridge and look at the image below. If the defect is present, then the toner cartridge is the problem 99% of the time. There is a slight possibility that during the conditioning stage of the print process the drum of the toner is not being fully discharged so when the next stage takes places part of the previous image gets put on the toner cartridge again. Very rare. If the defect is not present then the fuser has an issue.

My printer is leaving faint marks of other words down the side of the page...any way to fix that?

Yes, It sounds like a ghosting issue. Several components can cause a ghosting issue. The distance between the first occurance(the one on purpose) and the second occurance(ghost image) can determine the part of the machine causing the image problem
56.6mm - Fuser
54.5mm - Transfer Belt
75.4mm - Drum unit (1 of toner carts)

Ghost image on Epson Acculaser C4000

Ghosting can be caused by several components: 2nd BTR transfer roller, Photoconductor Unit (PCU) or the Fuser unit. The most likely is the PCU contacts being dirty, caused by toner getting between them. Open the front of the printer (cover B) and lift out the photoconductor. Clean all of the metal contacts down the sides of the PCU with a cloth and wipe out any loose toner from inside the printer and give the contacts inside the printer on the R/H side a good clean. Replace the PCU and close the front cover.
Hopefully all will now be well, if not open cover A and clean the transfer roller on the inside of the cover. If problem persists you will need to get a Tech out to look further as without seeing the printer it is pretty hard to diagnose.
Good luck.
