Both dish drawers are leaving a chalky dried on residue on the dishes. I ran a cleaning detergent in both drawers, made sure salt in water softener was filled, checked filters, and they are still leaving residue. I've tried washing the dishes after to get the residue off and it is hard to remove. Also, I have not changed dish detergents.

Why is there residue on my dishes when the dishwasher is done cleaning

All the reasons

The cause of this problem could be limescale or salt residues. If the residue can easily be wiped off with a finger, it is likely too much salt. If the residue is difficult to remove and comes off with vinegar, it is likely limescale (hard water build-up).May 29, 2023

Dishwater residue is a fairly common occurrence, and several things can cause it. Even the newest dishwashers may leave residue, and it might have nothing to do with the actual dishwasher function itself. However, there are things you can do to prevent, limit or completely remove dishwasher residue during every washing cycle.

Other People Are Reading

  1. Detergent Residue
    • Modern phosphate-free detergents are the main culprits when it comes to detergent residue. After every wash, many leave a slight whitish residue behind. After several washings, the residue becomes caked on and leaves a noticeable white tint to your dishes. Some dishwasher detergent brands are better than others, and either minimize residue or do not leave any. Once residue is present, however, the only way to remove it is by hand scrubbing or scraping.
    Hard-Water Residue
    • Hard-water residue comes from non-softened water from your hot water tank. Non-softened water leaves a white tint on dishes, but no amount of scrubbing will remove it. Only by wiping a small patch of the dish with vinegar or lemon juice will you be able to ascertain whether the white residue left is hard water or detergent. The slight acidic action of the vinegar or lemon juice removes hard-water stains, but they have no effect on detergent residue.
    Greasy Residue
    • If the dishes feel greasy when they come out of the dishwasher freshly washed, you are dealing with a greasy residue. There are two main reasons for this: either the detergent is not an effective grease remover, or the hot water inside of the dishwasher, either from the hot water tank or the dishwasher's heating elements, is not hot enough. Boosting the hot water temperature on the water tank may solve the problem, and a second wash cycle may be needed for the dishes. A preventive measure of running the dishwasher empty with a full load of detergent also removes the residue inside of the dishwasher.
    Streaking and Spotting Residue
    • If you have spotting or streaking on your dishes, that may be a sign you need a rinse agent. Many modern dishwashers recommend a rinse agent to prevent spotting or streaking, and without one, your dishes will never be crystal clear or streak-free. The next time you do a dishwasher load, add a rinse agent. If the dishes come out spot- and streak-free, the problem is solved.

Dishwasher leaves residue on dishes. Salt levels seem fine, rinse aid ok, and cleaning block is released fine.

Hi

White film deposits are observed if water is hard or when you are using more detergent than needed, try filling detergent cup half way. Try using white vinegar after the wash cycle is complete, run a complete cycle. Also turn down the heat on the hot water fed to the dishwasher. Try using water softener for better results.
You can also add vinegar in the final rinse cycle. Make sure that your soap dispenser drawer is opening and closing fine.

Hope this helps... Please post back if more information is required.

We have hard water at our home, but the new dishwasher leaves a thick film on the glasses. We use the rinse agent, but it's awful.

You have to buy a cartridge type water softener and attach it to the
inlet water line of your dish washer. In addition to this there must be
a salt compartment in the dish washer.
Refer the user guide /owners manual and locate. Fill it with the special
dish washer salt. ( Do not use kitchen salt used for food).
The dish washer salt may help to certain extent in softening the wash
tub water inside. Check the switch settings for rinse aid and salt
release settings in the machine. Refer manual!

Chalky film on dishes

check to make sure you are using the correct detergent & amount for your new washer - depending on the hardness of your water.
Clean the air gap.
Your problem could be one of two things. 1) Hard water. Outside of getting a water softener there really isn't much of a cure for that one. If you are unsure if you have hard water or not, simply take a sample to a local fish store and most of them will test it for free, or call your city's water department and ask. 2) Most likely though it is because you are using too much detergent. How often have you said to yourself, gee there's a lasagna pan in there, better fill up the little dispenser AND give it an extra big 'ole squirt just cuz it's really greasy? Try this, place a coffee cup standing upright on the bottom rack of your empty dishwasher. Fill the cup up to the brim with vinegar and run it through a cycle. This should clean out any residue that is in there currently. Then, the next time you do the dishes use HALF the detergent you normally use. See if that helps. Good luck!

Leaving white residue on dishes salt ok any ideas please

A white residue could be some type of water hardness or residual detergent. Wash dishes by hand and dry, does white residue remain? If yes, there is too much detergent in machine. If no, water problem. Consult with a local water expert

White Residue

most likely it is your detergent. palmolive eco is notorious for leaving a white chalky residue on dishes. try this out before calling a service tech: put unclean glasses in the dishwasher and in your soap dish and rinse cycle cup put 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar. if it cleans (or improves) your dishes, then your detergent is the culprit.
