    my camera says lens repair

  • fixitCanon Aug 29, 2008

Hi! I had the same problem.Twice I was able to fix it by tapping the body of the camera on my bed. No luck the third time. I sent it back to Canon and they wanted to charge me 134 dollars to fix it. I know I didn't do anything wrong! Clearly, Canon has a faulty product and will not stand behind it.

If you have the same problem, I found two websites that are compiling people's complaints. Perhaps for evidence in a class action suit, perhaps to vent. You should add a note too!

    Lens error. Restart camera

  • brianjsykes Apr 03, 2009

The SD850 is prone to this issue having researched this error. I as well have this issue with my SD850. I won't spend $100 on it because I can get a comparable camera for not that much more. Too bad Canon released such a faulty camera:( I won't by another Canon because of this.

I also get the "Lens error, restart camera" message when I turn on my Canon SD850 IS. Mine is already past the warranty, so I guess it's time to buy a new camera.

There could be a number of reasons for the lens error. ie. . sand in camera, impact damage etc. Typically the lens can be dissasembled and repaired by a competent camera repair technician. If you are certain that you did not damage the camera in any way I would send it back to canon for a warranty repair. If you however think you could have damaged it you are probably looking at around $100 to repair the camera. Hope this helps!

The Canon SD 850 has a host of issues. I experienced the lens error on the 30th day of my owning the camera and was able to get a replacement. Then, the replacement, after using just 2 times, would not start or turn on. I sent to Canon and they refused to honor the warranty saying their was water damage. It sat on a dresser, in the box, and was used only twice. They refused to do anything in regards to their so called 1 year warranty and I did not get this camera wet or even near any type of moisture. If I did, I would acknowledge that fact. You can buy earlier versions of this camera and newer versions but you cannot find this camera anymore so Canon knows they had an issue but will not stand behind their warranty.

The lens on my Cannon SD sure shot wil not close

Lens errors are fairly common for all digital cameras. Usually it's sand (be careful at the beach) or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Lens Error, Restart

Hi

What you are seeing is a generic stuck lens error message, turning off the camera and turning it on again will not fix the lens unfortunately.

Your lens needs to be cleaned or repaired, and if it cant be repaired it needs to be replaced. There are online places that will do it for a decent price and there are others that overcharge by way too much.

Fixya rules prevent me from giving you a link to anything off Fixya that would help you fix your camera.

Good luck from....

Lens will not close

Hi

Your camera is still under warranty, and what you are seeing is a generic message that means there is an error with the lens operation. Please call Canon and have them fix it for you for free!

For others who's cameras are not under warranty, you will need to have your lens repaired or replaced if you get the error messages mentioned above.

A couple solutions would be to either buy a defective camera online and make one good camera from the two if you can do that sort of thing yourself, or secondly have it repaired by somebody.

Don't bother trying to send the camera to Canon (though you can call them and verify what I'm about to say) because they will want $150+ to do the repair for you. Parts are not cheap to buy from them.

I know of one very affordable digital camera repair business... because I own it. The name is Darntoothysam, feel free to check us out, we are on that big auction website also (I don't plug their name for free), our seller ID is 'darntoothysam'. If you Google "darntoothysam" you will find us.

We have your repair listed as a package in our store for about $70. This covers a new lens, and return shipping of your camera! We even give a 45 day warranty on parts and labor. If you think you can use us then please check us out, even if you need to ask more questions then please feel free to contact me.

Hope this helps,

Help please

I'm assuming you have a lens error which is giving you the restart message.
It is kind of misleading, but to restart the camera means to power cycle the camera or remove and reinsert the battery.
If you do have a lens error, if restarting the camera doesn't work, you'll need to get the lens fixed if to remove the error.

Lens will not close

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
