Is security light supposed to be on on my wireless router?

if you enable security (wpa/ wep) it will turn on

If this is a wireless router you are having people accessing your network.I suggest you wep or secure your network.

The second light is for your wi-fi protected setup. If it solid green then you have a secure connection. Blinking means looking for device. Amber means a connection was not connected. Off means idle.

Please follow the steps in order to resolve the issue:

1.Open the router page (192.168.1.1)
2.Enter the username and password (by defualt password is admin and leave the username blank)
3.In the router setup page click Wireless and fill the sections and mentioned
Wireless Network Mode-Mixed
Wireless Network Name- As per your choice
Wireless Channel-6-2.437GHz
Wireless SSID Broadcast-Enable and click Save settings.

4.Now click Wireless Security and select the Security mode as WEP
5.WEP Encryption should be 64 bits
6.In the Key1 enter a 10digit/10 letter password and click save settings.
7.Click Advanced Wireless Settings and fill the section as mention
Beacon Interval-75
Fragmentation Threshold-2306
RTS Fragmentation-2307 and click save settings.

8.Turn off the router for 30 seconds and then turn it on and try to connect your laptops.

I have the same router and the Cisco Systems is lit up with a white light behind it and it's working fine.

try changing the wireless channel on the router .
are you able to see any other network on your computer ?
If you other networks on the computer then the wireless network on the router is not working properly.
You can try to upgrade the firmware of the router

Who is the manufacturer of your wireless router?
check the IP address of your router.
connect the computer to the router and check the Ip address of the computer and the default gateway number. Default gateway is the IP address of your router. suppose the default gateway is 192.168.1.1. then open the set up page of the router . check the wireless settings of the router SSID ,channel and the security settings. Do not change the settings on the router.
If you are using WPA2 security settings them that will network on the WRE54G.
Now your range expander and the router IP addresses should be in the same range. Suppose you router IP address is 192.168.x.y and the IP address of the WRE54G is by default 192.168.1.240.
Now the x in the router IP address should be 1.
If it is, then connect the WRE to the router and open the set up page of WRE. change the wireless settigns on the WRE and power cycle the WRE and the router.

First connect your router computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following link.
http://192.168.1.1
or
http://192.168.0.1
type user name as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password"
then you can see configuration page of router.
Then set WAN settings as your internet service providers settings.
Enable DHCP .
now go to wireless enable it.
If you want security then go to wep security and add wep code it is your password to connect wi fi .

Then save and restart router.

It's not really required to plug in your PC via ethernet cable to the wireless router in order for you to configure it. It is however, recommended to connect it via ethernet cable initially so that when you changethe wireless settings on the router you wont get disconnected. Please note, that when you connect your PC wirelessly all wireless settings should match (Wireless Name/SSID, Wireless Security (WEP/WPA keys or passphrase), Wireless MAC Filtering).

If someone else setup the router for you they may have turned off the wireless. If you can connect via ethernet use the web based configuration utility to turn it back on.

The intial setup is as follows in the manual:

To provide an initial wireless connection to your network and the Internet:
1 Connect the SBG900 to the cable TV system as described in Section A.
2 On each wireless client computer, install the wireless adapter hardware and
driver software according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3 On each wireless client computer, set up a wireless adapter profile to
“connect” the client to the SBG900. The procedure depends on your
wireless adapter and computer operating system.
In your initial profile, use the SBG900 default wireless Network Name
(ESSID) motorola (case-sensitive).
Your computers are connected but not secure.
The default SBG900 settings provide no wireless security. After
your wireless LAN is operational, be sure to enable security as
described in “Setting Up the Wireless LAN” in the SBG900
User Guide.
