HP C5180 scanner won't scan an image

C5180 works for printing pictures from memory card. I tried to use it to scan a drawing from paper, but all I get is a solid black image. It's about a year old., has not been heavily used. Any ideas?

  • hammr75 Jul 16, 2008

Will not scan. It responds in every other way, except for scanning. Says there is no network connection. Yet I have no problem printing from Word, Power Point, etc., and I have no problem copying. WTF?

Similar problem. New HP TouchSmart Computer with Vista and New (refurbished) HP C5180 with Vista original software provided. Won't scan. Gets error messages. Was on HP tech support to India for FOUR HOURS and got it to scan 2 images to Word. Nothing to e-mail, file, etc. Next day, back to zero. Same error messages.

I'm running Windows Vista 64bit Ultimate Edition. Have the C5180, all-in-one. HP Solution Center continually closed, saying No HP Devices Found. I completely uninstalled the printer software, using the install utility. Then, using Add/Remove Programs, removed all of the other HP software on my PC. Then deleted the HP directory (in program files x86), and removed the HP registry key under software in both HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Then rebooted. Once that was done and back up, I reran the install utility, but this time I followed the steps below (from here - http://hpanswers.blogspot.com/2007/12/no-hp-devices-detected-hp-solution.html):

Click on next until you get the below three options
(i) Recommended

(ii)Custom-------------->Select This

( iii)uninstall

Choose the custom install and click on next, ****

At begining of the installation, It gives you to 2 options

I) Yes, Check for updates..........

II) No, I prefer to do it Myself--Select this option and click on next

Immediatley in the next window ,you will have long list of softwares with the empty check boxes beside them.DO NOT select(check) Hp update, check rest of them and click on next to continue the installation.

You will able to open the HP solution centre with No errors.

Additionally, I did the following 2 steps, that I mostly found here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00897551&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=oj-54112-1&os=2093&product=1153481&rule=9653&lang=en)

*
hpqtra08.exe , located in the C:\program files\HP\digital imaging\bin directory.
*
hpqthb08.exe , located in the C:\program files\HP\digital imaging\bin directory.

Open the following ports on the firewall utility by following the instructions provided by the manufacturer:

My scanner when it scans there are little lines accross the picture it does not matter if I print it straight out or save it anything scanned HP photosmart c5180 all in one any thoughts

if the lines are in the direction of paper feed, the problem is probably dirt or ink from ball points on the glass. Against the dark background it is very hard to see. Try alcohol on a clean cloth and scrub the glass vigorously.
It could be that the ink cart are getting plugged up or just needs replaced.

You would need to download the software for your printer again and then install it on your computer. You can download it from here. Once it is installed, look for the scanner icon or HP Director which would have scanner icon.
