Yes you can increase your PC's performance by following these steps:
If you have Windows CD, boot your system with it and reinstall Windows and install only required software. Reason: You have too much clutter of junk files. This will help you start over. if you cannot do this, read on.
Remove all temporary files: Right click on C: drive in My Computer. Select properties then Disk cleanup.
Use it to remove unwanted junk files. Tick all the options in the list. Do the same with every drive.
Next, Press Windows logo Key (between Ctrl and Alt) + R. Input %TEMP% and press enter. Delete all files.
Restart your PC and defragment drives especially C. Press start --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmentor.
Change Visual settings:
After performing this, you should notice a small increase in performance.
If you want big changes, do as follows:
Increase system memory (RAM) if your motherboard allows. Make sure that you buy a compatible module.
Install an add-on PCI-E or AGP graphics card. This will give it a real boost.
As a side noet, there are many software claiming to improve performance but I always end up with an unstable Windows after using them, so I advise you not use them unless you know what you are doing.
You should regular hard disk maintenance ie Disk Cleanup and Defrag.
This will speed up your hard disk and remove old compressed and temporary files and return hard disk space for you to use.

Another way to speed up your computer is to add more RAM modules. RAM works much faster than a Page swapfile space on your hard disk. When the computer runs out of RAM it uses part of the hard disk space (Page swapfile).
