  1. First, check your cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges.
  2. Second, make sure your paper is not causing the problem. Paper that does not accept ink well can cause your images to smear or bleed. Plain paper is not the best choice for high-density graphics. Click here to see how to pick the best paper for your project .
  3. If the paper is not the problem and you are using genuine HP cartridges, print a clean test to see if the printer and cartridges are functioning properly. Load the printer with clean, plain, white paper and print a clean test page. To see how to print a clean test page, see your printer's User's Guide , or see HP Deskjet Printers - How To Print Internal Tests , or HP All-in-One Product Family - Printing Self-Test Reports .
  4. Evaluate the clean test page. Different printers produce different pages, but you should recognize elements from the examples below on your test page. In general, cartridge and printer problems are indicated by streaks, missing colors, or wrong colors.
    • Examples from a good printer and cartridges (your test page may not look exactly like this): Figure 1: Solid colors that match color dots on cartridge label Figure 2: Pattern unbroken, or broken in only a few places"Check Color Cartridge" displays even after - c00059225.gifloads/images/c00059225.gif" a"Check Color Cartridge" displays even after - c00059227.gif.gif" class="h_mi" />

Caution lite flashing over cartridge of hp deskjet 940c. error message says that there is not color ink cartridge in printer. There is and the interface says the tank is full. It won't print...

Even though the interface says the cartridge is full, if the printer detects it being empty, odds are you will have to replace the color cartridge, even though you are only printing black.
You can try taking the cartridge out and cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser and reseat the color cartridge. If no change, replace the cartridge.

Welcome to Fixya

This means the the printer cannot determine which cartridge is causing the error. Make sure that you are using original HP cartridges.

Please see troubleshooting procedure below:
  1. Remove the color cartridge from the left stall (which has a blue latch) and refasten the latch. Leave the other cartridge in place.
  2. Close the printer, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then look at the LCD display.
    • If the LCD display reads Insert Color Cartridge in Left Stall , the color cartridge may be causing the problem. Follow the steps below:
      1. Clean the color cartridge contacts. Click here to see how.
      2. Reinsert the color cartridge into the carriage and close the blue latch.
      3. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      4. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the color cartridge.
    • If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , follow the steps below:
      1. Reinsert the color cartridge.
      2. Remove the black or photo cartridge, depending on which one is installed in the right stall. The right stall has the gray latch. Be sure to refasten the latch on the empty stall.
      3. Clean the black or photo cartridge contacts.
      4. Reinsert the black or photo cartridge.
      5. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      6. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the black or photo cartridge.
  3. If replacing cartridges fails to correct the problem, click the link at the top of this page to contact HP.

Replace your color cartridge and power printer on. The color cartridge is probably empty (even though there might be a little ink left in it). Many inkjet printers require the color cartridge for composite black even if you are not printing in color.

Hi! I am getting a "replace toner yellow" error message. The orange lightning bolt error light is on too. Do I need to replace the yellow toner to print in black and white or is there a different error...

Specifically on the Magicolor 5430DL you can print when a cartridge is empty, but this is disabled by default. To enable printing even with a toner cartridge empty.Press the Menu Button, then press the right button until the ENGINE menu appears and press the select button.Next press the right button until TONER appears and press SelectOnce in the Toner Menu the first option should be "EMPTY" if not press the right button until you see "EMPTY" and press Select. There are two options, the default is "STOP" pressing the right button once should change from STOP to CONTINUE.While the display reads "CONTINUE" press Select. You should see the message "CONTINUE is selected"You can now print even when one or more cartridges are empty. However, the lack of the cartridge's color will be noticed in any print jobs calling for that color... (Obviously)

Printer does not recognize new ink cartridge

Are you using "refilled" hp cartridges? If so, they may be interpreted as "empty" or a non-hp cartridge if the carrtidge shell was manufactured prior to the recent time that hp began coding the electrics on the same type cartridges. This can also happen if you are using "compatibles". If this is the case, try buying original new hp carts. If that is what you already have, return the cart to the store as defective and as for a replacement.

I cannot print in color even though I can print

What has changed?

Is it possible that the color cartridge is empty?

Check the driver properties and make sure that the driver hasn't been changed to "Monochrome", "Grayscale" or Black and White.

Brpther DCP 330c does not recognise new black ink cartridge

Usually there is more than one cartridge empty when you receive this kind of problem. Try opening the top cover and check if the display changes - it should change to specify one (or more) of the color cartridges as empty. That one(s) should be changed too.

Unfortuantely , to solve the issue , sadly, yes you will have to replace the empty cartridge to continue to use the printer in a normal fashion. Its a sneaky and dirty trick many printer manufactuers do to make more money off of the customer through the purchase of printer ink.
