First, select straight stitch on your pattern selector. Check your zigzag setting to see that it is on zero.If this doesn't help, push the needle bar to the left and see if it will move. It's possible the assembly is seized and won't move the way it is supposed to.
Next, try the widest zigzag stitch. If you only get a straight stitch it is time for a service.

How to change needle position on straight stitch on Viking Husquavana emerald 118

Adjust the stitch width dial to move the needle when using the straight stitch. 5 is the center; 0 is the farthest left. See page 19 (page 21 of the PDF) of the manual, which is available on the Emerald 118 page: https://www.husqvarnaviking.com/en-us/machines/emerald-trade;-118 . The current link to the manual is https://www.husqvarnaviking.com/getattachment/Machines/EMERALD-trade;-118/Manual_Emerald116-118-122.pdf.aspx .

I hope this helps. Change your fabric's position to center the stitching line below the needle, if you were trying to move the needle to the right.

How to correct needle position.

There should be an adjustment to move the needle, however, would recommend having a technician do it as getting the needle in the correct position is paramount for preventing misalignment causing broken needles.

How do I center the needle on a Viking 6430; there is no eccentric adjustment on the needle bar frame on this model.

Am having difficulty finding information on this machine.

Perhaps this machine is a left-needle position machine, ie the normal straight stitch sewing position is on the left, not centered. There are quite a few machines out there with this feature, Necchi is another. The needle only swings right when a decorative or zig-zag stitch is selected.

If it is actually a center-needle position machine, it is probably out of alignment. There is most likely an adjustment. For more help, you can also join some Viking user groups on Yahoo. Most members are very dedicated to the brand and would be able to provide some very helpful advice.

Change needles

Look at the top of the needle where it is inserted in the needle holder. There are spaces for 4 needles - A B C and D. Most likely you are using the backmost needle positions - C & D. Look on the needle holder there are little wholes which are sctually screw holes that can be loosened and tightened using a Torx 6 screw driver (available at Sears) if you no longer have the needle changer screw driver. By turning the screw, the needle is eeither tightened or loosened. Be careful that when you loosen the needle it does not fall through the machine. Put a slip of paper on the needle plate below the needle to catch the needles when they are losened. You have a great machine in the Huskylock 936 and well worth keeping it serviced by a certified Husqvarna Viking service technician. You can locate a dealer near you by visiting the husqvarna viking website and clicking on the Dealer link on the left-hand side of the page - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com

Good luck.

Needle position won't lock in

Sounds like the needle bar alignment is broken. When you turn on the machine, does the needle move from left to right and then goes to center? This is called calibrating to center. I suspect it doesn't. Best recommendation is to take to local authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service or have them send to Husqvarna Viking (SVP) Service Technical Department for repair. A list of authorized Husqvarna Viking dealers can be found at the Husqvarna Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us

Good luck.
