I DON'T HAVE SOFTWARE TO START THE COMPUTER IT COMES ON ALL I SEE IS WINDOWS 98 AND THEN NOTHING WHAT RECOVERY DISC DO I NEED

This is quite an old machine. Consider upgrading to a better system. If you want to restore it, you need a Windows 98 CD. Unfortunately its no longer for sale. You may find it on ebay though. If you can ask a friend to lend it to you, use it to install and use your own genuine Windows code. The code can be found on the sticker on the side or base of the PC.

Hi Susana,

That sounds a little bit drastic . . . and probably unnecessary.

First, hold down the power button on the notebook for about 5 seconds - until it switches off. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button once to switch on again. Shortly after switching on, you should be presented with a list of options. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Start Windows Normally" then press ENTER.

You can't re-install from the backup discs if the notebook is frozen - you need to switch it off first. The backup discs can then be installed either at startup or after loading Windows. If Windows starts up normally after powering off, you shouldn't need to do anything else. If it still fails to start, please post back for further assistance.

BElectric.

How do i reinstall window in my toshiba sateliteL300D Leptop

Important: This process will DELETE EVERYTHING on the unit. Make sure you have backed up your files. Also, be sure the unit is plugged in. it would give you more problems if the process is to be interrupted.

1. Turn the computer OFF.

2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while
powering on the computer. When the computer powers on, the
Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen displays.

3. Choose Recovery to factory default. Click NEXT.
4. Choose Recover to out-of-the-box state. Click NEXT/START.
5. It should take at least an hour or less. Press any key when it says the HDD has been recovered

If pressing zero does not work. Its either you don't have a recovery partition and that the unit would need recovery discs.

It should have come with the unit or you can call Toshiba 800-457-7777 to Order one.

If you have the Recovery Discs then all you need to do are the following.

1. Put the FIRST disc inside the computer. If there are two or more disc it would indicate 1 of 2 or 1 of 3. If you don't see anything like that on the disc then you only have 1 recovery disc and that should be enough.

2. If anything pops up just click CANCEL or EXIT or just press the "X" button on the top right of the page.

3. Turn the computer OFF.

4. Hold the letter "C" then press the POWER button to turn it ON. If your computer starts beeping you can let go. It should boot to the DVD drive automatically. If it would bring you to your Windows Desktop you can turn the unit off and try again. And if it would not work at all you can hold F12 while turning the computer ON. You should get to a BOOT MENU. Just highlight CD/DVD drive or ODD(Optical Disc Drive) using the arrow keys and then press ENTER.

5. If you got it correctly you would here the DVD spinning and it would say"Windows is loading files."
6. Don't be surprised if you see Windows '95 or some other OS showing on the page. It would be just the Recovery Environment.

7. Choose Recovery to factory default. Click NEXT.
8. Choose Recover to out-of-the-box state. Click NEXT/START.
9. It should take at least 2-3hour at the most. Press any key when it says the HDD has been recovered.

The computer will restart on its own several times so just let it be and wait for it to finish.

Please feel free to give your comment and please rate this solution.

How to fix ntdlr is missing?

substitute the NTLDR file in the right place. if you have access to another computer, copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM which is available from the recovery CD which comes with computer. If you do not have the recovery CD, they were available from another computer using the same Operating System (Windows XP in your case). The location was C:\i386\ntldr C:\i386\ntdetect.com then use a bootable disc to restart the computer (the Win XP bootable CD may not work, a Win 98 bootable CD will work). After entering MS DOS mode, copy these 2 files to the C drive in the proper location. After restart, then pressing F10 on start up (used for system recovery on my computer), start the repair of Windows via system recovery (which was not possible earlier). This reinstalled all Windows drivers and system files, while preserving all data on my computer.

How do i reset laptop back to manufacture settings. I was not goiven the cds for the laptop when i got it for chrsitmas. I ask the person who got it for me and they told me that cds did not even come with...

Depending on the manufacturer and model, there may be a recovery partition on your computer's hard drive. When you turn the computer on, watch for any message that pops up, like "Press F11 for recovery" or something similar. Look at the programs listed on the Windows Start menu as well. Often the manufacturer includes a program to start recovery from the partition.

If the computer doesn't have a recovery partition and didn't come with software on CD, you may be out of luck. Most systems like this include a utility that lets you make your own recovery disc set when you get the computer. But you need to make those discs before you start using the system and making major changes. Otherwise you won't have a good factory image to go back to.

Check the manufacturer's website for support information. Some companies offer recovery sets for sale. If Windows is running, you can also try using the System Restore function to roll your computer back to some earlier configuration.

If all else fails, you can do a full installation of Windows yourself if you can borrow a copy of whichever version came on the computer. You'll find the information on the Windows key sticker normally on the bottom of the computer. If you go with this method, you'll need to install hardware drivers (which can be downloaded from the manufacturer's support page for your model) and then activate Windows using the product key on the sticker.

You will also need to install your own versions of software that may have come preloaded (antivirus programs, disc burner software, etc.). This is often a good thing, though. Many computers come preloaded with a bunch of "bloatware" that just slows things down. Installing Windows yourself lets you put on only what you really need, and there is lots of good free, open-source software out there for almost any application.

Hope this helps you out a little. Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

HP MEDIA CENTER 864N Desktop PC&p RECOVERY CD

NOTE: Most HP and Compaq desktop PCs that ship with Windows Vista and XP do not come with recovery discs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. Using a hidden partition provides a convenient, more stable recovery solution.
Step 1: Create a set of recovery discs or a recovery DVD
To create the recovery disc set, Click Start , All Programs , PC Help & Tools (or similar), open the HP or Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creation software, and follow the on-screen directions.
If you cannot create recovery discs or your discs have become damaged, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Order recovery CDs on the Web
If you are not able to create a set of recovery discs, you may be able to order a set of replacement discs from HP. HP maintains a stock of replacement recovery discs for several years after the product has been released. However, because of licensing restrictions, HP is only able to provide these recovery discs for a limited time. If your computer is several years past its warranty period, HP may not be able to supply replacement discs for your computer. If this is the case, you can install a new operating system that meets the minimum system requirements of your computer, or, alternatively, upgrade your computer hardware.
To find out if HP has recovery discs that you can order and to order them from HP, use the following steps:
NOTE: The steps in this section apply to United States and Canada. For Europe, Middle East, and Africa please refer to the HP support document Europe, Middle East, and Africa - Statement on the Availability of the Recovery Software on CD . For other countries/regions, contact your local HP support center for information about obtaining recovery CDs.
Go to the Software & Driver Downloads page .
Enter the product number or model name for your computer into the field provided.

Click the operating system link (the version of Windows that came with your computer).
Figure 2: Example of operating system link

Find the Recovery Disc ordering section and click the link to start the ordering process.
NOTE: Before trying to order, make sure that you have read the important "Read this..." information listed in this Recover Disc ordering section.
Note: - If the link to order a recovery disc set is not available, there may not be any more sets available for purchase. HP cannot create recovery discs that contain a version of Windows that has been obsoleted by Microsoft, such as Windows 95, 98, and Me. Some recovery disc sets may have run out of stock and may not be available to order.

Follow the directions from the "Read this...” article and from the ordering pages to complete the ordering process.
NOTE: The ordering pages use a secure connection to protect your privacy.
If you cannot create a recovery disc set and you cannot order a recovery disc set from HP, go to the next step.
Step 3: Contact Support
If you have tried the steps 1 and 2 and could not create or obtain a recovery disc set, contact HP Customer Care . HP Customer Care may be able to send out new discs or replace defective versions depending on your situation and availability.
