Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator too cold

I bought this refrigerator 2+ years ago. The original (digital) settings were 0 degrees (freezer) and 27 degrees (refrigerator), it worked fine. Recently I reset the fridge portion to 35, found it too cold, things started freezing, so I changed it back to 37, no change. Even at 45 (max) things still freeze. Setting the freezer to 5 (max) doesn't help either. Turning the refrigerator off for several hours didn't help either. I cleaned the coils, checked for air and water leaks etc. I read something about the damper control being bad. Could it be something else?

On a fridge freezer only the fridge temperature is monitored. In a cold location the fridge might not even need cooling and the freezer would get too warm but the thing won't care.

If the fridge sensor sees it as too warm then it will keep the motor running and the first thing to get really cold is the freezer.

Remember the freezing part is not temperature controlled ion a fridgefreezer.

You more than likely need to replace the control cable between the upper and lower board. It comes as a kit with the upper board. You can also do a bypass test by unplugging your thermoster from the circuit board. The thermoster is the temperature control for the refrigerator nothing to do with the freezer.

SOURCE: Refrigerator is cold, freezer not freezing

Amana refrig have 2 main problems . 1 is the defrost bimetal ( 1" cylinder at the top right on the freezer coils with 2 wires ) and the other is a refrigerant leak where the copper tubing joins the aluminum tubing at the freezer coils ( evaporator coils ) . If your freezer fan is not working and you have frost on the freezer coils then replace the bimetal as this also controls the defrost heater ( defrost thermostat ) . If you have no frost on the coils ( for both checks , you will have to remove the inside rear freezer panel , maybe 12 screws ) , then a refrigerant leak has happened and the best solution would be to replace the refrig .

SOURCE: have kenmore 253.54622402 side by side--from the

" waited 1 hour freezer 20 degrees // cold food side 45 degrees and no air flowing from damper " As per this it indicates that the ventilations are getting blocked after few hours.First the air was flowing from damper but after one hour it stopped flowing air from damper.Check the damper if there is too much water collected in the damper then press the damper and remove the water collected in it.------------ The working procedure of this Kenmore side by side refrigerator is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fresh food section gets cold. The air from freezer to fridge passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. Now this problem which you mentioned. In this problem the freezer thaws, this happens if the thermostat is not functioning or the heater is not heating. Then the ice starts getting collected on the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is at the internal section of freezer. If too much ice gets collected then this ice blocks the fan in the freezer section from functioning and this blocks the damper section with ice getting collected there. This all procedure is controlled by the main defrost board of the unit. Now if the damper is not got blocked with too much water or if the ice is not got collected on the damper area then check the evaporator coils. If there is too much ice got collected on the coils, then takes a hair dryer and melt the collected ice. Then see if the problem returns again. But if there is little bit ice collected on the coils and fan is running properly then it's not a problem. In that case main board is faulty and it has to be replaced. The main defrost board is working but its not controlling the functions as required so the freezer thaws after few hours.

You can get required parts from sears part direct online site or from repairclinic.com site.

--------------------------

To test defrost thermostat you can test this way:---

The defrost thermostat is difficult to test since many refrigerators use different fixed temperature settings and unless you have a very accurate temperature test device the test will not provide proper results. Now you can take the defrost thermostat out of the unit and place the element only in a glass of ice water. When the element is cold it should have continunity between the two wires.------ The meter should not show a reading if the thermostat is turned off. If a reading appears, replace the thermostat.

When the thermostat is turned on, the meter should indicate "0" ohm or .3 or .2 on a digital readout. If it does not appear as "0" ohm or .3 or .2, replace thermostat.Turn the thermostat on and place each probe on either side of the thermostat so meter reads "0" ohm or .2 ohm digital. Put water and some ice in the cup. Temperature should be 32 degrees. If, after four minutes, the meter does not reflect infinite or .0000 on the digital meter open circuit, replace the thermostat.----If thermostat checked out ok then check defrost heater connection. The defrost heater is connected to the side of evaporator coil in the freezer section. If this defrost heater is faulty then it will not melt the ice getting collected on the evaporator coil and due to that defrost system will not be able to function as required.Remove the wire for one side of the heating element from the wiring and measure it for continuity, usually around 20 ohms or so.-----------

Now to see where defrost heater is located. Please click on this link below and see part number 14 on the diagram. And part number 15 is evaporator coil. And part number 21 is thermostat.

That is the dumbest answer I've ever heard from a technician.

The cold control on most boxes controls the freezer temperature. You want the freezer temp to be around zero degrees.

Somewhere (usually in the refrigerator section) there's another control that actually sets a damper, letting some cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator. Higher numbers equal lower temperature. Find that second control knob and turn it up by 1 or 2 numbers, let an hour or so pass and check your refrigerator temp. You want about 40 degrees in the fridge.

PSC23NSTESS FREEZING VEGTABLES

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.

First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

Refrigerator not working, freezer works great

Yes, only one compressor. The refrigeration system actually only cools the freezer. Then there is a vent from the freezer to the refrigerator that allows the cold air to circulate to the refrigerator side. That little dial you turn to set the refrigerator temperature is actually only open or closing that vent. The dial for the freezer temperature is an actual thermostat that operates the compressor.

The temperature of the freezer should be between 0 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is in or near this range and the refrigerator is only at 55 degrees (the refrig should be at 38 to 45 degrees) then check for blockage or icing where the air from the freezer circulates into the refrigerator.

If the freezer is not in or near the 0 to -10 degrees then you have a refrigeration problem. First thing to do is clean the condenser coil on the bottom of the unit using rags and a shop-vac. Be careful of the wiring and tubing down there plus the sharp metal.
Unplug the unit before cleaning.

Otherwise, you'll need to call a refrigerator service technician to repair the refrigeration system for you.

If this helps you, please select YES to one of the first two ratings questions. Thank you, and Good Luck.
