I recently took a shot with my pentax zx-7, but when it was taking the picture everything froze up. it wouldn't turn off when i moved the switch, it would just stay on, and if you look through the viewfinder everything is just black, you can't see out of it. I took the batteries out and put them back in but now it just won't turn on. What happened and what should I do?

Try dismounting the lens and cleaning the camera and lens contacts with a soft lint-free cloth.

Slr mirror is stuck. remove the lens and try to slightly move the mirror up and down ( but not forcing it to move!)and pushing the shutter switch. Try also applying lighter fluid in the mechanism while operating or shooting, fluid will help loosen the stucked mechanism.

Others here have suggested the problem lays with the plastic gear on the advancing motor beside the mirror.

This might cost $100 or so...?

The shutter assembly has failed, a common fault with all older autofocus SLR's. it's nothing to do with the autofocus itself, just that AF SLR's usually tend to have fully electronically operated shutters which cannot be serviced and repaired like older models.

The only fix is to replace it, but it's no longer available and even if you do find one the repair is not economically worthwhile.

If you're not too choosy as to the brand, then free similar SLR models complete with lenses are regularly available on FreeCycle and Freegle. It's where I got all of mine.

My Pentax ZX-7 (MX-7) mirror is stuck

This camera can be notorious for these types of film advance issues. The bad news is that a ZX-7 is probably not repairable. Good news is that there are many used Pentax bodies out there that will work with you lenses.

Before using it I suggest you to keep it in a dehumidifier. Or a large airtight container with dehumidified silica gel. Keep it there for two or three days.
When a camera is lying around, fungus tends to grow inside. Also the metal parts become rusty. Dehumidifying and exposing to mild sunlight might reduce these effects.
Gentle patting might also relieve the problem. Don't pat too hard, or you will have more problems!

Clean the battery contacts with a soft rubber pencil eraser. It doesn't take much corrosion -- due to moisture, or skin oil deposited on the posts -- to create resistance enough to keep the camera from getting a full supply of power.

Did you have the asa film speed set correctly? Thats usually the cause unless your battery isn;t quite right.

Cannot remove lens

Dear Shutterbug2,
To release the lens you need to push the lens release button which is on the bottom left of the lens mount, and then turn the lens counterclockwise. If this doesn't work then it is most likely a broken lens release button, and you should then bring the camera to an authorized service technician.

Sincerely,
Allan

Pentax AX-7 does not take picture

If you just put in standard AA batteries, they do not have enough power to drive the camera. Use high power ones, or better still 2300 mAh or 2500 mAh rechargeable batteries

Pentax zx-50 Shutter Problems?

I really think this is the classic zx - 50 shutter motor problem : small motor on the side of the mirror box is not cocking the shutter . This is very repairable but unfortunately it requires fair amount stripping down of the camera to get to the fault and so you will have to take it in for repairs.
