I was sewing on tshirt material (an actual tshirt) and the understitching was a mess of thread. I messed with tension and thread and bobbin and it finally started sewing correctly. Now I am trying to sew pillows out of suede fabric and my machine is skipping stitches. Goes for a ways then misses about an inch and then starts sewing correctly again. Any solutions please? I have to get these pillows done by tomorrow! Thank you.
Re: I was sewing on tshirt material (an actual tshirt)...
Go to www.singerco.com and download a manual for free, also they have a lot of good tips on their website. I know some basics, make sure that you are not using old thread, and the right size needle for the job.

Make sure you have cleaned out all the thread pieces in the bobbin area and it is clean.
Install a brand new needle.
Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the top tension to the midway point and test your machine. Adjust the top tension until both threads meet in the middle of the fabric.
Is it really the bobbin thread that is globbing? Check closely. Usually it is the upper thread accumulating under the fabric.
If it is in fact the bobbin thread, then the bobbin case is not threaded correctly, the bobbin case tension needs adjustment, or it is broken and needs replacement. There are web sites and YouTube videos that show how to adjust the bobbin case tension.
QUICK FIXES: Remove all the thread from the machine. Clean the area around the feed dogs and bobbin area. Oil as instructed in the owner's manual using ONLY fresh, good quality sewing machine oil (only 1-2 drops each spot). Install a brand new needle insuring it is installed correctly. Avoid using fuzzy, old, or bargain bin thread. Rethread: Be sure you raise the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread so it will seat properly in the tension disk--and check to make sure you are threading the machine correctly. Check that the upper tension is set properly (the factory standard is usually the halfway point between the high & low number on the selection). Test on a scrap of the fabric you wish to sew. Adjust the upper tension--either tighten to pull the upper thread toward the top of the fabric, or loosen to pull more upper thread down.
It sounds like you have what is referred to as "thread nesting" or birdnesting. If the upper thread is actually creating a mess under the fabric, then the upper tension most likely needs to be tighter.
Find the tensions on your machine. Usually a screw below on the bobbin regulates the top stitches tension. Usually a numbered wheel on top--where the thread is around it--regulates the bottom stitches. YOU NEED TO ADJUST THE TOP WHEEL, test on scrap material, and if looser, you are in the right direction. If it is still a mess. turn the knob to a lower number.
What type of sewing machine is it? Did you thread it correctly & have you fidgeted with the tension controls? generally it's the tension thats messed up if its not actually stitching. the bobbin case is in correctly and the bobbin thread has been pulled up?
Most of your problems can be solved by taking care of your top threading, usually your underside threading will be messed up because of the top thread, bobbins cause loose stitches on top, Read you manual if you don't have one check online and you can usually buy one, also, you can take into Sears, to the sewing section and they can guide you as to what is wrong.Don't mess with your bobbin tension unless you know what you are doing!!!!!!
This is sometimes caused by the upper thread not threaded correctly. You need to thread it first with the pressure foot in the up position. You need to "floss" the thread into the clear plastic guide as this is where the tension is. The tension should be set to E for embroidering. Also make sure you get the bobbin thread in the slot on the bobbin case. Also, lower your pressure foot before you begin embroidering. Hope this helps!
This could either be due to the bobbin being wound too loosely, or the tension on the top thread is too loose. This just happened to me the other day, and I thought it was the bobbin thread, but then I put another bobbin in with a different color than the top thread (this is a huge help in diagnosing thread issues), and I was surprised to find that it was actually the top thread that was a big loopy mess on the underside of the fabric. I fixed it by tightening the tension on the top thread (quite a bit), and everything was fine.
Either the thread is not in the tension assembly, the tension is not adjusted high enough or the thread is not in the take up assembly. It's possible you have the wrong bobbin in the machine. sewman7
