My belkin light is on but the internet connection to my laptop keeps breaking up consistently

I have a main pc downstairs with a wireless rooter attatched to it, and then I have my laptop upstairs with a belkin wireless USB network adapter connected to it. The internet connection keeps on breaking up, and I keep having to go downstairs to make sure all the green lights on the wireless rooter are on, and then sometimes the internet comes back on, but this is only for about five minutes or so, until the connection breaks again. The light on the wireless adapter is on all the time, but my internet hardly ever works on my laptop, and on the downstairs pc it works a little bit better but is still not reliable.

hi my belkin f5d7230-4 has all the lights on, the internet is directly into this via cables to 2 pcs, yet my internet will not work at all.

this is a fairly new router. when the broadband is only via the modem the internet works fine.

    please help

Take the laptop down and put it right next to the router. Try it for a while, if that solved the problem, the laptop is not getting a good enough signal from the router. If that is it, you need a better router and adapter on the laptop.

That that doesn't help, it might be a bad Internet provider. Where I am, it is often both of those problems at once.

Since it is so unreliable on the desktop p.c., it does sound like both problems. Still, try putting the laptop next to the router.

May need to replace the modem, but I'd call the ISP (Internet Service Provider) first to see what diagnostics they can do. Be aware that some ISP's will NEVER admit it is their fault.

This sounds like it is probably the networking cables as your PC is directly connected so shouldnt have problems with net access. Get new cables as a first step :0)

The ISP modem connects to the wireless routers main port. Then connect the PC to any other port on the router.

Use the default wireless settings that Belkin provides. There is a small tag under the unit with the default information. Or, use custom settings in the web admin.

1. Belkin makes you not only setup the wireless/WEP but you have to turn it on as well. (radio button I think) Some also have a separate configuration for N vs. B/G, since it does both. check your setup

Look under "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" in the configuration.

2. This is normal, that's your power light.

Cant connect to internet with main computer, one upstairs is fine

The upstairs computer is wired or wireless ?

If the upstairs computer is working then the router must be working properly.
Check the connection between the downstairs computer and the router.
If it is a wireless computer then check the wireless connection status on that computer.

Trying to connect a wired network wirelessly to a router

No. You'll need to run a "cross-over" Ethernet cable from one of the "LAN" ports on the "downstairs" router, connecting to the "WAN" port on another router that you will need to buy, and place "upstairs", and connect the 4 devices to the 4 "LAN" ports.

Or, run a long "straight-through" Ethernet cable from your DSL-modem (or cable-modem) that is "downstairs", and move your wireless router "upstairs", and connect the 4 devices to the router's "LAN" ports.
Your laptop "downstairs" should still be able to connect (wirelessly) to the wireless-router that is "upstairs".

My internet keeps disconnecting

It sounds like the wire from your house to the isp switch is faulty you should probably call them down to fix. Or it could just be the modem are you using the same modem for both computers? If so then that's probably the problem.
