Refrig I have a side by side and the freezer keeps defrosting and leaving water at the bottom. The water then freezes leaving a sheet of ice at the bottom. I have seen the heating coil at the bottom back wall go on and cause this melting process. Question: Is there a timer/temp element that I need to look at? My impression is that the defrost cycle is coming on too often or staying on too long. Any ideas? Jerry

Not sure what model you have or the age, but it could be the door gasket. It could also be the door closure at the bottom of the hinge side being worn down and not closing the door all the way. These normally last about 15 years.

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs,check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

The high level of condensation is due to constant opening of the fridge when the frost develops. It is required to defrost off the condensation and if this has an auto mode timer for defrost , then it is possible that it is not working.
The water must drain out to the drain tank but since it is formed out of the freezer the water flows out of the collection tray.

Remove the food and remove the rear freezer panel . Using a hair dryer , start in the middle , below the coils , defrosting , until you
see the drain hole . Use hot water to help defrost the hole . Once water starts going thru the hole , use a small hose inserted into the hole , and blow thru , to remove any unseen debris in the drain line . Use an ALUMINUM solid wire , 14-16 guage , with the insulation completely off , and insert one end into the drain hole as far as possible without any force . Wrap the other end about 1 1/2 to 2 turns , around the black rod (defrost heater) , above the hole . When refrig goes into defrost , the heat will transfer from the heater , to the wire , keeping the hole from freezing up again .

I have an LG armoire style fridge/freezer and it had lots ice in the bottom and would eventually drip onto the floor. The problem was with the defrost controller. The moisture that enters the freezer when it is opened condenses and freezes on the freezer coil/fins. There is a heating element that sits under this coil which gets turned on by the defrost controller to melt the frost/ice. As the frost/ice melts it drips into a metal tray which channels the water to a drain hole to have it drop into the drip tray underneath the unit for it to evaporate. The problem is that the before the water has time to leave the freezer, it freezes thereby plugging up the drain hole and thus causing subsequent defrost cycles to have the water flow into the bottom of the freezer where it freezes. Eventually the bottom of the freezer fills up with enough ice for the melted water to flow onto the floor. I had my defrost controller replaced (just outside the warranty period!) and it worked for about 1-month and then same thing happened again. Instead of paying for another defrost controller that would probably not work 100% my serviceman used the old paper-clip trick. He took a paper clip, stretched it out and then wrapped one end around the heating element and placed the other end into the drain hole. Thus when the heating element comes on the paper clip keeps the drain hole warm/hot and prevents the water from freezing. It has been 9 months since this fix and I haven't had any ice pooling in bottom of the freezer.

When I had the problem and started diagnosing it I opened up the freezer, pulled out the racks, draws, and eventually the door. Then I removed the ice maker and then a few screws and carefully removed the back white wall panel disconnecting the fan and any other electrical connections. Behind the panel you will see the cooling coil/fins, the heating element, the drip pan, and drain hole. Most likely you will see a sheet of ice everywhere. The best way to remove the ice is to boil a bunch of water in a tea kettle and slowly pour it on the ice to get it to melt so that you can start breaking out the pieces. Have a sponge and bucket ready to remove the water as the ice starts to melt. Eventually you should get all of the ice removed and get the drain hole unplugged. After all the ice is removed, you still need to fix the real problem by replacing the defrost controller, using the paper clip trick, or both.

do you see alot of frost on the rear panel of the frzer if so it has failed to defrost and repair is req or do a manual defrost until a tech can get to you if no frost sorry sounds like you have a weak tired compressor or leak of freon and being 30 yrs old it is not cost effective to repair this item....

Sounds like a main control board problem keeping the freezer fan from working . If no air flow to the top of the freezer , the icemaker will stop working and the ice will begin to melt ( leaking from freezer ) . The coils will start to freeze up due to no air flow across them . If continued for a period of time , the cold air could return thru the return vent located in the bottom of the ref/freezer section and freeze the water tank in the refrig section , causing the no water thru dispensor .

good attempt, its actually a clogged drain thats backing up and your drain water is not able to leave refrig so it falls to bottom of freezer floor and eventually out the door. romve the items from the freezer and take the lower back wall off form inside, directly under the evaporator under all that ice there is a drain hole, youll need to clear that hole of iec( pouring boiling water down until you get a free flow of water then you can reassemble uint problem solved

most likely you have a frozen drain in the freezer section so that whne your refrig defrosts the water runs out into the freezer compartment instead of the drain pan underneath. the fix is to flush the drain with warm water to clear the obstruction. the drain can be reached either by removing the cover in the freezer area or by back flushing the line from beneath the refrig.
