The best batteries are rechargeable NiMh batteries of the ENELOOP (Sanyo) type. These batteries have a very, very low discharge. Some other brands have such types too.

I had the same prolem. OK, try this. Try to discharge the AA batteries in some use, flashlight or else,,,,then recharge them, full charge, install the batteriers ...they should work fine....
I read somewhere that canon is able free of charge to correct a shortcircuit that the camera is susceptible to develop in the installation of batteries......But I hope the advise will work...
Remove batteries when not in use.
