Maytag Performa side by side refridgerator. Water is leaking from behind the panel on the freezer side of of the fridge. Through the vents on the back panel there is a heating coil that seems to come on periodically and gets hot enough to glow. Why would there be a heating coil in a fridge and what do you think the problem is.

We had a similar problem. It ended up being a frozen pea that fell down into the defrost drain and was blocking the water from draining out each time the freezer defrosted.

YOU NEED TO CHECK THAT YOUR HEATER ELEMENT AND SENSORS ARE FUNCTIONING WELL AS THAT WILL CAUSE THE ICE BUILD UP AND THE UNIT NOT TO WORK PROPERLY. GOODLUCK.MOHAMED

Your compressor is damaged. It must be either serviced or recharged. This is going to require a service call no matter what the solution due to the need for recharge after the compressor is replaced.

Your timer for the automatic defrost is defective. Replace it. If you thawed out the back of the freezer, this could be good for 3-7 days and it will freeze up again. I had the same trouble.

The defrost thermostat is failing on these machines as well as the adaptive defrost control.
The compressor start relay is on recall from Maytag also.
