Your machine should have a special buttonhole foot which has a place to insert a button, You will probably have to pull on opposite ends of the foot to open it. Place the button in the foot and then squeeze it together to make the button secure. Attach the foot to the machine. It should snap on.
looking at the left side of the machine you will see your needle bar at the front and the presser foot bar at the back. You should also see another lever which needs to be pulled down so that it rests in the buttonhole foot.Select buttonhole on your machine and it should sew. The button determines how long the buttonhole is.

I did all of the above re: the 19233 buttonhole and it still does not work. The buttonhole bar pulls down but where is it suppose to fit into the buttonhole foot? The lever hangs between the 2 white things on the left side of the foot.

The buttonhole bar is not suppose to fit in the buttonhole foot, it will just rest behind it. Try repeating buttonhole sewing. In the pattern selector, look for an arrow that looks like is going back (u turn), and then select the pattern with a buttonhole again.. Now, simply step on the foot control to sew an identical buttonhole. Is like you are making a second buttonhole. It took me a while, but I finally got it. Hope it helps. Pardon my English, I am a Spanish speaker.

E2 error code brother sewing machine

A stitch other than the buttonhole or bar tack stitch was selected and the foot controller was pressed (or the start/stop button was pressed if the foot controller is not connected) while the buttonhole lever is lowered.

Raise the buttonhole lever before continuing the operation.
Note Each time a key pressed or an incorrect operation is performed, a beep is sounded.
  • For a correct operationOne beep is sounded.
  • If an incorrect operation is performedTwo or four beeps are sounded.
  • If the machine locks up, for example, because the thread is tangledThe sewing machine continues to beep for four seconds.
    The machine automatically stops.
Be sure to check for the cause of the error, and correct it before continuing

I get a E4 code whan I turn on machine and I can't figure out what is wrong.

Brother Computer Codes E1: Make sure the presser foot is lowered before sewing.

E2: You chose a stitch other than a buttonhole stitch or a bar tack stitch and you tried to sew with the buttonhole lever in the lowered position. Raise the buttonhole lever.

E3: If you selected the buttonhole or tack bar stitch and start to sew with the buttonhole lever raised, you will get the E3 code. Lower the buttonhole lever.

E4: You hit the reverse button while the bobbin winder shaft was moved over to the right. Move the bobbin winder shaft to the left.

E5: On automatic sewing machines, the start/stop button was pressed while the foot controller was plugged in. Unplug the foot controller if you are using the automatic function.

E6: This code tells you that the motor locked up because the thread is tangled. Untangle the thread, make sure the machine is threaded properly and that the proper tension is set before continuing.

Buttonhole instructions needed for Singer 7422 Advance

These are the exact instructions from the Manual. 1. Select one of buttonhole patterns.
2. Replace the presser foot with the buttonhole foot. (Install presser foot with little red mark towards the front)
3. Insert the button into the buttonhole foot. (the part located in the back crescent shaped)
4. Lower the buttonhole lever (to the left of the needle) so that it drops down vertically between the stoppers A and B.
5. Carefully mark the position of buttonhole on your garment.
6. Place the fabric under the foot. Pull out the bobbin thread underneath the fabric to a length of about 4 inches to the rear.
7. Align the buttonhole mark on the fabric with the mark on the buttonhole foot, and then lower the buttonhole foot.
8. While holding the top thread, start the machine.
*Sewing will be completed automatically.
9. When sewing is finished, use a buttonhole opener to open up the frabric in the center of the buttonhole. Be careful not to cut anyt of the seam thread.
I hope this helps.
