I have a netgear wgr614 v9 router. My kindle 3 will not connect to it. The router is password protected.

Is the password case sensitive? If your are 100% sure that you entered the correct password then try lowering the security level of the netgear router temporarily and try again. I have had problems with some devices connecting to higher security levels of wireless routers. Once the device is connected then switch the level back up. However please confirm security level compatibility. If all else fails then use the WPS to connect.

Can you connect other devices to your wifi using the same password?
If so, it is the Kindle at fault.
Go to your wifi connections in Settings and remove your connection (I think it may say "forget").
Turn off your Kindle by holding down the power button for a full 30 seconds.
Restart your Kindle and connect to wifi, re-entering the password on the back of your router.

From the Home screen, press the Menu button.
Select Settings, and then select view next to Wi-Fi Settings.
In the list of detected networks, choose a network to connect to it.
If your Wi-Fi network and router support WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), your Kindle will detect it.
If you don't see your network in the list, you need to add the network manually.
If the network is protected by a password or WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), enter the password and then select Submit.If you don't know the Wi-Fi network password, contact the person who set up the Wi-Fi network.After you connect to a Wi-Fi network, your Kindle automatically connects to it again whenever that network is in range. If more than one network is in range, your Kindle automatically connects to the last network used.

Ask someone for the password, or if this is your router then you may need to factory reset the router and setup a new password

Are you sure its the modem and not a wireless router? Modems don't normally have a password to them. If it is a router, contact me back and I will attempt to walk you thru the process.

The password is the one set up in your wireless router, protecting your network from unauthorized access. Please provide your router's brand, model and version designation as a comment to this solution and I'll try to give you further advice.

Four reasons come to mind that may prevent you from connecting:

1. Wi-Fi Passwords are case sensitive. Please check again if you entered the password with proper casing and you did not put any extra white space in front or behind. I know, this sounds annoying, but it is really the most common cause for connection problems.
2. Give your network a unique SSID. This is the network name that shows up in the list of detected networks. Default names like NETGEAR can be troublesome if a neighbor one block down the street happens to have a router from the same company.
3. Some routers have a MAC address filter as a security measure, limiting service to devices specifically whitelisted. If your router is set up for this, add your Kindle's MAC address to the list of permitted devices. You can check the MAC of your Kindle from its settings page (press HOME, MENU, select SETTINGS, see paragraph headlined "Device Info".
   
4. There are twelve different standards for Wi-Fi transmission collected under the hood IEEE 802.11. The four most dominant transmission modes are called a, b, g and n. They differ in radio frequency, modulation method and data rate. Kindle supports the two standards IEEE 802.11 b and g only, which is not really a problem because all wireless routers I ever encountered support one or both of these, too. However, the WPN824v3 belongs to the "RangeMax" series of NetGear routers. In combination with certain Netgear wireless network adapters, it can be set up to use a proprietary modification of 802.11g exclusively (108Mb/sec, doubling the 54Mb/sec for 802.11g), not allowing for standard b or g connections. Make sure it allows standard b+g connections, too.

You have to enter the WPA share key. The router password is only to access the built in administration web facility. The WPA share key is the encryption key necessary for the Kindle to connect to your router.

Try resetting the router back to factory default, and set up again with a new password. What make and model of router are you using? Just ran into this issue with neighbors 2 new Kindles, which connect fine to my NetGear router, but will not connect to their Linksys WRT54GS router.
