This model is about ten years old and it can plays discs of CD format only. There is OM for it: http://www.alpine-electronics.ru/podderzhka/archive.html
leave it turned of for a couple of days maybe hit it with a hair drier carefully not to go to close to the lens, see how you go if it still doesnt work coald be a lens error
i would try reformatting your ipod to factory specs (can be easily done with itunes following the information provided at mac.com)
to reset the ipod, turn it off, then on -- then hold down the 'menu' key while pressing the center 'click' key until you get the apple logo. this just may solve the problem.
The Alpine cda-7842 was not intended to play burned cd's and Mp3's. I don't recemmend you play anything but store bought cd's. I belive that the laser can be damaged by playing Mp3's and they sometimes make weird noises because of the laser seeking erratically, due to the year that cda-7842 was manufactered.
if it is new you may have left the screw in the back of the radio you have to takje this screw out for the laser to function it should have a plastic box on it
The Alpine has two tigger wires when it turns on. One is an AMP TURN ON wire (blue/white) and a PWR ANT wire (blue) and that wire only comes on when using the radio or an optional HD radio unit ... When it was installed/connected . someone hooked your amp turn on wires for your "full range amps" to the PWR ANT wire. And the sub amp trigger is either hooked correctly to the AMP TURN ON WIRE or somewhere else, it probably shouldn't be... Check it. Amp triggers should all be to the blue/white wire from your alpine. Warning: Alpine trigger wires, are very easy to mess up they supply a very limited amount of power.
If you had to connect the remote amp turn on lead from the headunit to the factory amp turn on lead you may find your problem there.
On many headunits there are 2 blue remote wires 1 for antenna and one for amp turn on. The antenna remote only supplies power when the radio is playing not when playing CD's. If you hooked the antenna wire to the amp trigger then the amps shut down when you play a cd. If that's not it let me know and I will research further.
