Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 have 32 bit operating systems as "default" so to say (Windows 7 can be 64 bit as well).
The 32 bit system can only use up to 4 GB RAM. The operating system will reserve about 750 MB RAM for running the PC.

It sounds like you are running a 32 bit operating system XP, Vista, or Windows 7 (32).
The 32 bit Operating Systems are only able to see and use about 3Gb of RAM. To use a greater amount you will need a 64 bit OS (either Windows XP/64 or Windows 7/64) or one of the open source 64 bit operating systems.

Hello, I was looking to upgrade the ram in my old dell 5150. The specs say you can use a Max of 4 1 gig sticks yet these specs where released prior to windows 7 ultimate which uses far more ram. What are...

Check www.crucial.com. Use the downloadable program to analyze your system or use the interactive menu system to explore your options.

Check online forums using google searches for terms like 'dell 5150 memory upgrade'. Sometimes, the maximum in the manual is not the real maximum. My Dimension 1000 laptop accepted a certain 1 GB card when the manual said the max was 256MB. Still running it after nearly ten years. The laptop was **** with 512MB (256 built-in and 256 add-on card) but the gf uses it every day.

I dont know wat sort of ram to choose for this board because i am wanting to put in x6 4 gig ram ddr3 memory modules

running triple channel memory with more than 3 DDR3 1600 sticks installed (4-6) cuts the memory speed in half. you have to run with 3 sticks at a time in triple channel mode or you will see a reduction in ram speeds.

OCZ is making some good 4 gig ram sticks. they have a 12 gig triple channel memory kit with 3x4gig sticks. you could get 2 of these kits and have your 6 sticks- 24 gigs total, but your memory frequencies will be lower- your ram access will be slower.

Compaq EVO N1020V Not reporting RAM correctly

This sounds as thought he RAM is faulty.

You need to have installed 2 x 512 MB DDR 266 SoDIMMs and not 1 x SoDIMM.

If you have placed 1 x 1Gb SoDIMM in ther EVO this would account for you only seeing 480Mb of RAM.

Problems with Foxconn 6100K8MA-RS Motherboard memory upgrade

This is an oldtime POST code memory error. Likely that ram is either installed wrong, bad RAM or the mobo doesn't like one of the memory sticks.

See http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm.

You must count the beeps.

Switch sticks around in various combinations (2 gig in slot one, 1 gig in slot two, switch, try other stick, etc) and see if it is the memory or the motherboard.

Gateway sb-4100-b won't recognize new memory

Check the owners manual of your computer for the correct installation of 2 sticks of memory, this can be critical on computers with 2 banks of 2 slots, it will also tell you the maximum ram that will work. If you do not have the manual, go to the manufactures website and then go to the support link, and browse for memory installation. BPCS

Ram

Maybe one of the memory slot on your motherboard is faulty. Try testing each slot by placing one memory module on a slot and start your pc. If your pc made beeping sounds, that slot might be faulty. Do this on the other slots.

Ram upgrade

It's generally not a good idea to mix sizes as your more likely to get problems, but that said it probably should still work it's most likely your configuration consult your motherboard book as to what order you should install the memory you have.
