Yes the wireless mouse will work with the Netbook just plug in the adaptor and give it a try. That was the first thing my wife did with her Netbook was to get a wirless mouse and then I got one for my notebook. I especially like the scroll movement. Actually most generic Mouse will probably work on it too.

if this is a wireless mouse then the usb connecter and the mouse both need to be synched up to each other. there is usually a small button on them both.
There is a small ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the motherboard. If there was any dramatic jostling of the system or it was disassembled for any reason it may have come undone. I have heard of this happening in the past.
If your lucky, someone just turned it off. The toggle for the mouse pad is Fn+F7 simultaneously.
This is usually cause by interference from other electronic devices. Try a standard usb mouse and see if the problem goes away. If it does then you know something is interferring.
