It sounds like the flood protection system has been activated. This is most likely due to water in the bottom of the dishwasher (under the washing compartment) or it could be due to a faulty float or float switch.
The first thing to do is check the float inside the dishwasher. It's the dome/mushroom shape plastic part in the bottom of the wash compartment. Have a feel around under the dome and check there isn't anything trapped underneath it (maybe cutlery or a build up of waste). If something is stuck in there, simply removing it should be enough to get you running again.
If it's clean underneath try pushing the dome down gently in case it's just stuck in the up position. If it pushes down, lift it up and down a few more times, clean underneath it and make sure it drops down on it's own when you lift it and let go. If it falls freely, you're good to go.
If there's nothing under the float and it moves up and down freely, next check for water in the bottom of the washer. To do this, tilt the washer forwards then backwards to about 20 degrees. Obviously, if it's under-counter you'll need to pull it right out before doing this. If you see a pool of water on the floor then you have water leaking into the bottom of the washer!
There are several possible causes of this - some are simple and easy to correct - but you should do these checks first, then post back here for further assistance.
