So difficult to even begin to answer because we don't know what is wrong with the machine or even the model of the machine. It may be a simple problem that could be resolved with a clean and oil or could involve replacing expensive parts.
the only suggestion I have is go or call a sewing machine shop that works on brother sewing machines and ask them about the screen,, and what it would cost to replace it, and that will help you decide if you want the repair cost or to trade it in on a new one,, BUT DON'T CALL THE ONE THAT WANT'S TO SELL YOU A NEW ONE...
You can get a replacement at Sewing Parts Online, and it costs $3.99. Here's the link: http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/actuating-spring-singer-357365.aspx. Unfortunately, although they sell service manuals, they do not have your model in stock, but if you email or call them, they can probably get it for you--if you want it.
I just wanted to share my situation with you. I had the same problem. When I tried to use my Buttonhole fine-adjustment screw, it broke up and fell inside the machine. My husband opened the machine to get the broken parts out (two of them: first one - white-colored plastic broken part of the adjustment screw and a metal, half-moon shaped washer).
I called 1-877-276-8437 (BROTHER), and the person who checked the list of replacement parts said to me that this particular screw was not in the list. So that person gave me the number of the closest service center where I called.
The service person told me that it was no cost to see what was the problem, but to determine how much the solution would cost he needed to see the machine. I asked about the minimal cost of a service; it was $89+ the cost of the parts. It means the minimal cost of the repair (without the price of the replacement part) goes 14 dollars beyond the price of a new machine, which in Amazon.com today 10/2011 is $75 for the same model LS-2125(i).
My solution was to get out the broken part for which my husband unscrewed for me the front plastic shell and took out the two little broken parts. During this procedure, he realized I could use a narrow scissors to make the remaining part of the Buttonhole fine-adjustment screw turn around. This way I can still use my machine with no need of buying a new one.
Cost effective is a matter of choice. For instance, if you like this machine and it costs $200 to repair, then it is worth it. The machine you could buy new for $200 would not be as good a machine as the one you have now. However, if you are thinking of upgrading(spending more and getting more features),wanted to do a better job of sewing jeans and sheer fabric without puckering, then you might consider buying new. See, it is purely subjective. If you just want to know if the repair job is more than the replacement value of the machine then it is not worthwhile. More than likely your machine, in good working condition, has a value of about $50 but the repair will cost at least $100. sewman7
